I'd make these things mandatory......if a driver feels he must wear his native dress, then all drivers must be made to wear their native dress too, it'd be like a coke advert, we'd all be able to hold hands and merrily dance around cab ranks singing 'I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony'.

This would be very amusing

CC

But you don't believe in dress codes, so why support this one?

I was using irony......sorry to have to point that out.

CC

Is irony used after clothes washy?

Pendle taxi dress code plan is dropped

A PLAN to introduce a taxi drivers’ dress code which would exclude traditional Asian clothing has fallen through.

Councillors on Pendle’s Taxi Licensing Committee concluded that a dress code would be unenforceable and a matter for businesses to consider independently.

The committee had considered either imposing a “smart dress” code, or writing to companies to suggest they consider it.

At the meeting Coun Mohammed Iqbal said: “I think we put both those proposals in the bin.

“Who are we to tell businesses how to run their affairs?

“It is up to the companies to consider what their customers want and how best to attract business.”

Pauline McCormick, chairman of the taxi licensing committee, said: “The idea was actually first mentioned to me by a cab driver.

“I think it is really nice when a taxi driver is smartly dressed and gets out to help you with bags and things.

“The drivers must have smart trousers and shirts to wear.”

Nelson County Councillor George Adam attended the meeting as a resident to address councillors.

He said: “It’s ridiculous. I wouldn’t wear this suit if I was driving a cab.

“You would need something comfortable.

“Why impose this on drivers when councillors themselves have no dress code?

“I have seen councillors turn up to meetings in shorts. Start in-house first.”

Councillors at the meeting voted to abandon the scheme.

The code would have required male drivers to wear smart trousers, shirt, and shoes and their female counterparts long trousers, knee-length skirt and blouse or knee-length dress.

Some cabbies in Pendle had opposed the code as it ruled out wearing the shalwar kameez, a traditional outfit consisting of a tunic and loose fitting pants.

The majority of Pendle’s taxi drivers are Asian men, many of whom regarded the plan as unfair
