City's Hackney cabs should all be black, says taxi driver

Calls have been made for all Hackney cabs in Cambridge to be black – to mirror Oxford.

Taxi driver Robert Soanes, who also supplies taxis with internal advertising screens, wants all city Hackneys to be black, as in Oxford and London.

The call comes after Panther Taxis and Cambridge City Licensed Taxis sent instructions to drivers to smarten up their act, issuing new dress codes.

Mr Soanes said: “I would like to see all Hackney cabs in Cambridge being black. At the moment there is just a hotchpotch of colours and styles and the cars are all different shapes and sizes so that customers don’t even know they are in a Hackney cab.

“I do the advertising screens for all the cabs and also supply them to cabs in Oxford where all of their vehicles are like London Hackney cabs and are black. I would love to see that in Cambridge. It would be much better if they were all a uniform colour.”

The call comes after the 167 taxi drivers who operate at the city’s railway station were told to smarten up by Cambridge City Licensed Taxis.

And Panther Taxis has also launched a new dress code with an incentive scheme to encourage drivers to conform, as the News has reported.

But Glenn Hall, chairman of the licensed taxi drivers’ group, believes the cost of replacing scores of cars would be prohibitive.

He said: “We did try to do that a few years ago and it would be good to have uniform cabs but the cost for drivers to change their existing vehicles would be very expensive and in these difficult financial times most would not be able to afford it.”

Yes, Oxford is very nice, I used to deliver to Thames valley police (prisoners microwaveable all day breakfasts), its a pity its the only place where ive seen the old drunks in groups of 6 or more on benches mid-morning swigging full strength lager from cans, just 200 yds from the police station, I wonder what the tourists think about that?

I've got a shed load of paint in a lovely shade of lime green.
I think all taxis should be lime green, so that customers can recognise them.
