Taxi driver is abducted and assaulted by gang at knifepoint

The man was attacked by four people as he waited for a friend in Glasgow city centre.

A taxi driver was abducted in his car at knifepoint then robbed and assaulted by a gang.

The gang targeted the driver as he waited to collect a friend in Union Street in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said a man tapped on his window, produced a knife and got into the passenger seat. Another man and two women then got into the back of the car and he was forced to take them to Castlemilk.

He was ordered to stop at the Croftfoot roundabout, where at least six people surrounded the car and threatened the driver. He was then ordered to drive into Glenacre Drive where he was assaulted and robbed.

Detective Constable John Johnstone, from the Strathclyde Police robbery unit, is appealing for witnesses.

He said: "This was obviously a terrifying ordeal for the driver, who thankfully did not require any medical treatment for his injuries.

"I would like to speak to anyone who was on Union Street around 1.20am - or 2.20am if you had already changed your watch to British Summer Time - on Sunday morning and saw two men and two women hanging around close to Central Station.

"I would also appeal to anyone who saw a Silver Toyota Avensis around 1.35am (2.35am) near to Croftfoot roundabout or Glenacre Drive."

One of the attackers is described as a white man aged 25 to 30, with short hair. He was wearing a black jacket and a maroon shirt. The two women and the second man are described as white and aged between 20 to 30 years.

I feel sorry for the driver this happened to, but, CCTV would have helped identify the culprits in this deed and may well have prevented it happening in the first place

Feel sorry for the guy but "waiting for a friend on Union St"???? I think he may be covering up for ranking up on Union St. Favourite place for seagullers picking up. I could be wrong tho'.

Glasgow Taxis are not of the car variety.

If this was edinburgh, the scumbag council would have the driver up for forcing the passenger to pull his knife on him,thus causing the passenger distress by having to perform such an action and the driver would then be suspended and the knife wielder commended for his ordeal...

Spot on I reckon, and he's not the first to have been done over like that in recent months from what I hear. Was it really worth it for an £8.00 fare, that's if he had actually got paid. If PH are prepared to take risks like this, things must be really bad in the Glasgow PH trade. If they were so busy off their radio circuit, they wouldn't need to pirate.
