Candy Cabs
BBC1 Tuesday April 5 9.00 pm

Best friends Jackie and Elaine are mourning the death of their friend Shazza, whose passing has left them in the lurch just as they were set to go into business with an all-female cab company, in this new comedy written by Johanne McAndrew and Elliot Hope. It's at Shazza's funeral that they make a pact to proceed with their plan.

With chaotic personal lives, a secretly re-mortgaged home and a bunch of best friends depending on them for jobs, they embark on their dream of Candy Cabs. Taking the biggest gamble of their lives, they accept delivery of a fleet of bright pink taxis, celebrate with a launch party and pray that business will flow.

But they soon discover a host of hidden obstacles, including the need to sit the "knowledge" before they can even hit the road, and the little problem of signing up customers. Jackie takes an unorthodox approach to manipulating the media, much to Elaine's dismay. And just what are the motives of Kenny Ho, the enigmatic boss of the town's largest fleet of cabs?

The shady Dennis, Shazza's ex, turns up to disrupt their lives, Elaine struggles to keep her secret from her husband and, unexpectedly, romance is in the air for Jackie.

With so many distractions, can they keep their eyes on the road and turn their fledgling business into the success they dream about?

Jackie is played by Jo Joyner, Elaine by Lisa Millett and Dennis by Paul Kaye. Candy Cabs also stars Paul Nicholls, Denis Lawson, John Henshaw, Jodie Prenger, Claire Sweeney, Melanie Hill, Tom Goodman-Hill and Daniel Ryan.

Even the LO is a pretty boy and a charmer. Clearly comedy then

Tony is everything you wouldn’t expect in a local figure of authority. As Head of the Taxi Permits Department, you’d think he would be stern, perhaps a bit po-faced and officious. Well think again. Tony is a cheeky charmer who loves our Candy Girls – but not as much as they love him. He’s gorgeous. But what about getting into a relationship with that mad bint Jackie – is he taking on more than he bargained for...or is he really prepared to forfeit everything he has for the woman he loves?

The opposition

Kenny started his own company Kenny Ho: Taxis That Go with 2 second-hand Ford Cortinas and his mum manning a 24-hour-switchboard. Look at him now – he’s got 237 cars on the road and is South Hadley’s King of the Cabs. So why would this self-made man and local pillar of the community be remotely interested in Candy Cabs? Half a dozen bright pink Barbie-buses are hardly going to make a dent in his empire...so why exactly do him and his men want them off the road?

It had top happen didn't it.

I wonder if they will be as illegal as the mob they are based on.

And how many new pink lady firms are going to start up on the back of this?

About as many as will go bust soon after methinks.

I saw these "candy cabs" parked in a compound at the rear of the BBC studio's in Manchester last year, I wondered what was going on.

I was thinking the same as Sussex. I bet we'll see a couple of these pink-style firms emerging on the back of this film... and I doubt any will last.

The whole set up was a joke.

I, too, saw these cars parked up a few months back and wondered what was going on. I thought it was Pink Ladies Part II. Turned out they were filming in the area.

I think I'll give this one a miss I bet it will be a padded out version of the carry on film but with less talented actors and about as realistic as that other one a few years back i.e. about as far from reality as you can get

I remember adventures of a taxi driver with Barry Evans, Judy Geeson, Diana Dors and Adrienne Posta. That was a little rude!

I didn't believe I would ever see such sh** on the Beeb.

And the only vehicle not doing an illegal hiring was the one at the beggining carrying the coffin.

Clearly the 'Pink Ladies' kiss of death has made it's way to the telly. [-(

But you missed Jo Joyner going topless.

It was worth it for that alone.
