The hack's at Leeds Bradford never worked alongside Arrow, Arrow won the contract and the hacks moved off at midnight and Arrow moved on.

It is unlikely he would use the hacks as he would be unable to take a cut from the fare as he does at LBIA. They charge approx £20.80 to Leeds Train Station and the hacks are only approx £16.00p. Drivers at Arrow get approx £13.50p for the journey and Arrow take the rest. They also pay over £110 per week base rent.

A sad day for the hacks and also the travelling public into Manchester Airport.

BE PREPARRED TO GET RIPPED OFF

Leeds Bradford/Arrow could be in for a shock if the hacks get there way in the near future.

COUNCILLORS are calling for a new taxi rank to be provided close to Leeds-Bradford Airport.

In 2008 the airport’s operators let a contract to Arrow private hire car company and since then taxis – which in Leeds are the black and white cabs – have been unable to “rank up” at the airport.

The new arrangement has seen an increase in the number of cabs plying for trade outside Leeds railway station, at times causing congestion and delays.

Taxi firms have argued that a rank near the airport would ease congestion by removing around 70 cabs from the city centre.

Now an £80,000 proposal has been drawn up for a rank to be created at White House Lane, just outside the airport’s boundary. The hackney carriage trade has offered a £20,000 contribution towards the scheme.

The council’s City Development Scrutiny Board is recommending to the Executive Board that the new rank be laid out. It says that there should be negotiations with the airport over the scheme and the council should be prepared to “act unilaterally” if necessary.

A report to the scrutiny board said the airport opposed the proposal on strategic, safety and operational grounds and added: “Officers question the extent to which a solution which is unilaterally imposed on the airport will contribute to an integrated surface access strategy.”

But Coun John Procter, board chairman, told the YEP: “Something has to be done. This issue has been around for some years and it just is not going away. We have listened to the trade, the airport and passengers and it seems the sensible thing to do.”

Mohammed Iqbal, (Lab, City and Hunslet) a former Hackney Carriage driver in Leeds for 15 years before becoming a councillor, said: “Every other international airport in the UK has a choice of a Hackney rank or private hire. The public should have a choice. I hope the executive board listens to the unanimous decision made by scrutiny board. At the moment Hackney cars cannot pick up at the airport even if they have dropped someone off. it’s not very green is it?”

So what is the present state of play at Manchester Airport?

Is there a danger of the black cabs losing the facility?

Surely there is always a danger of losing something you have if you don't take care of it

I work at Manchester and you just hit the nail on the head. The taxi trade there were not interested in any "business" proposals. They are under the impression that they have a devine right to be there and the public should just have no choice.

Manchesters hackneys hackneys cannot be thrown off the Airport because of "grandfather rights". They have always been there, so they must remain. This is the mentality of cab drivers, it must be true, so why worry ??

Just a hunch, but is the taxi drivers' dress code or the distinct lack of it an issue at Manchester Airport?

Are there numerous Hackney drivers turning up for work at Manchester Airport dress like a 'bag 'o sh*t'?

Yes Brummie, I think the LACK of dress code amongst the drivers, particularly the religious aspect of some dress is causing embaressment.

However the following BBC report may have a more powerful influence. The Taxi holding and facilities area at the Airport are to the north of the airport itself. Land to the south is green belt and cannot be built on. The following report shows the Airports need to free all land to the north.

Yesterday 12th, the cabins went up on each terminal at Manchester. The cabins are outside the terminal door, you have to pass each one before you get sight of the Taxi rank. The Airport officials finally admitted that the current taxi holding area (and cabins) is to be reclaimed. They promise another location, but, have no idea where yet. This meeting and admissision is, I believe, due to the report published on this site.
