Taken from the Addison Lee car sales site.

Addison Lee are known and loved throughout London. Our Volkswagen Sharans have become as much a part of the London landscape as the black taxi. With over 20,000 journey’s completed every day and over 3,000 employees, you can be certain that any vehicle purchased from Addison Lee will be of the absolute highest standard. You are more than welcome to test drive our vehicles but please bring both parts (Photocard & Paper) of your Driving Licence.

3000 employees??? I thought they were self employed.

Taken from their website.

Conditions: All driving positions are on a self-employed basis. All vehicles are supplied and serviced by Addison Lee and are yours to use outside of working hours. Drivers also have access to an exclusive website, which allocates early morning jobs to start off a shift.

If they are on average £30 per job it isn't that bad.

That's about 210 a day
I made much more than that on a friday night just doing local and a few long runs
But still they are making a lot of money I think everyone should start driving for this company

Take away fuel, rent, hours worked etc etc and you won't have a deal left.

Hi,

There seems to be a bit of interest about Addison Lee here so I thought I'd mention that on 20th January 2012 I will have completed another year’s service with Addison Lee again as a licensed London private hire driver.

I have written a post that is now completed and will be published on 20th January 2012 at 8.30am.

It may help anyone considering joining Addison Lee as a self employed London minicab or private hire driver. It will be available at http://cab4now.com/2012/01/10/working-with-addison-lee-as-a-licensed-london-private-hire-driver/.

Like a pheonix from the ashes. I particularly enjoyed reading your lastest blog. I think that an app for all taxis and ph would be wonderful, especially if I created said app and put on the market for free until everybody was so used to it I could then charge for it

What's the difference between a Minicab and Private Hire :?

Thanks but I thought Private included anything that wasn't public hire, ie Minicabs  It would appear that you are as confused as I

The term minicab has no legal status, but primarily it means the London version of what in the provinces would be called a PHV. Of course, the term minicab is often used in the provinces as well to apply to PHVs, but perhaps the reason for its more dominant use in London is because PHV licensing is only a relatively recent innovation there. By the same token, for obvious reasons the term PHV is now used in London, and indeed in time the term minicab is likely to be used less.

Of course, neither in London or elsewhere has the word 'minicab' any real legal relevance these days, so its use is merely informal.

Of course, legally the term PHV can include chauffer driver and the more mainstream trade, but I doubt if chauffer drive would be happy if you used 'minicab' to describe it. On the other hand, like any word or phrase there's no real bar to using it to mean whatever you want apart from the fact that others might not know what you mean.

But as for distinguishing minicabs and PHVs in the quote, I can't for the world think of how it might be useful to distinguish the two for the purposes of describing an 'app'.

In my opinion it would be better to use the term "Minicab" than PHV as it better draws the line, in the Publics Mind, between the two types of vehicle.
