So why. Mr Skippy41, is this Scottish news report tarnishing the England and Wales section?

What "England and Wales" section? We have stuff from all over the world posted here.
Perhaps you should ask Alex for one.

The Scottish section is for " Scottish acts, and any other Scottish issues members wish to post here."
This is hardly an exclusively Scottish issue, it could have happened anywhere.

I tell you what!!

You Scots north of the border are so f*cking easy to wind up, it's untrue!!

Talk about fully wound up!

Look out!!

Here goes the spring!!

TWANG!!

But why wind us up?....We Scots are perfect and should be emulated rather than wound up by cranks.

'perfect and should be emulated'; that I can have a giggle about!!!

'rather than wound up by cranks'; you are a humourless lot!!

Respected yes, but obviously deficient and requiring tuition in the Department of Humour!!

It sounds to me like the louts were trying it on and things got a bit out of hand BUT surely the golden rule applies here never carry a weapon in your car whilst working

I feel sorry for the bloke but this situation is largely his own doing how experienced was he skippy ?

IMO, the three louts have concocted a story, all stuck to it and the poor cabbie has been unfairly done.

Three louts giving evidence under oath will always win against a lone accused.

And what was reported as being given in evidence, probably bares little resemblance to what really happened.

Didn't help his case here though, did he?

The former soldier did, however, admit to having a knife in the car. He claimed to have used it in his work with pheasants but kept it stowed away either in the pocket of his driver's door or under his seat.

He offered no explanation as to how the three youths would have come to know of its existence but did admit that the journey was perfectly normal until Walkerburn.

With the car turned over, the knife would have probably been visible after dropping out of the door pocket or from under the seat in the force of the accident.

The driver NEVER said that he had brandished the knife. The vehicle was probably searched by police after the accident and if only one of the louts had seen the knife after the accident, a story could easily have been concocted by the miscreants.

They would have had plenty of time to come up with a story in the ambulance or at the hospital, before they were interviewed by police.

I don't doubt it.

However, it still begs the question of why he would need to have it within easy reach of his driver seat.
In the boot would have been a safer bet.

Also why didn't he ask for MUF?

It would not have helped him much if it had been in the boot. Just having the knife in the car is an offence as one of my friends found out a couple of years ago. He had a knife in the boot to cut the wedding ribbons off. He ended up with a caution.

Community service for knife-wielding cabbie

Published 27 May 2011

A taxi driver who pulled a knife out on his passengers before crashing his cab has steered clear of a prison sentence.

Ronald Fones from Jedburgh was transporting three clubbers from Peebles back from Galashiels when the journey turned nasty near Walkerburn.

The 64-year-old was found guilty of reckless driving and brandishing a bladed weapon at an earlier hearing of Peebles Sheriff Court.

April's trial had heard how Euan Forsyth, 22, Dean Wood, 23 and Marcus Thomson, 21, were all in Fones' taxi following a night out.

And how a dispute over the fare led to a bizarre sequence of events - which saw the driver pulling a knife, Mr Thomson being hurled from the cab and dragged along the road, and the Ford Mondeo car ending up on to its roof.

Trainee mechanic Euan Forsyth told the court how the journey from hell began for him and his two pals after a night out clubbing in Galashiels, when they paid Fones £30 to be taken the 18 miles journey home.

He said: "It was a totally normal taxi ride until we got to Walkerburn. Then he demanded another £30 and we told him no way. An argument broke out and he ended up pulling a knife.

"He then pulled into a layby and told us to get out but as Marcus attempted to step out he pulled away again, back in the direction of Galashiels."

Farmer Marcus Thomson told the court: "I was left hanging on, half in and out of the car as he sped away.

"Euan was trying to pull me back in but eventually after about 15 metres I couldn't hang on any more and fell out onto the road clutching Euan's shoe. I suffered a fair few cuts and bruises and had a sore hip for a while after it."

All four men escaped with only minor injuries.

Fones denied receiving the initial £30 payment from the trio.

And claimed the argument only broke out when they began telling him they had paid.

The former soldier did however admit to having a knife in the car.

Sheriff Drummond deferred sentence until Wednesday to allow for social inquiry and community service reports.

At this week's hearing defence agent Iain Burke said: "Mr Fones respects the decision but is unhappy and frustrated at the outcome. This entire incident was an extremely odd situation. His taxi licence has been suspended as a result and he has to attend a hearing this Friday at which it is likely that he will lose this licence."

Fones was sentenced to 120 hours community service.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond added: "Mr Fones, you are the driver of a public service vehicle, who produced a knife in the course of a dispute about a fare, this is a very serious matter and an extraordinary incident.

"However fortunately for you I feel your age and lack of record are reasons enough to not deal with this by way of custody."

hardly the point...he was still carrying about a knife in his vehicle.

That said I carry Scissors in my first aid kit and a screwdriver in my Toolkit and those could be just as deadly.

He had a result not being banged up.

And a big one at that.
