Taxi Driver Online

I started to change the rear shoes on my fairway.The rear hubs have some play in them,the back wheels can be rocked like front wheels with loose wheel bearings.The axles quiet etc but how much (if any) play is normal for the rear hubs.

Remove the hub center cap and then the split pin and tighten it until no play and refit split pin

Skippy his on about the rear wheel bearings they are pressed on to the rear half shafts there should be no play in the rear wheel bearings if it is very very slight no probs but if you can rock the rear wheels like the front bearings you will need new rear bearings soon.

Thanks for the reply.As far as I can work out changing them looks like it involves special tools so I might either leave it for a bit or see if I can find another axle to go on.

I did manage to get sight of a manual but it mentions a couple of special tools that are apparently essential.

Its a pig of a job to do , but as with everything it helps to have the correct tools.

I had a rear wheel bearing replaced by a "specialist" in Bristol who used large hammers, grinders and finally a torch to cut it off the half shaft!
Certainly not pretty and to make matters worse it was leaking diff oil from the same bearing after only 10K so had to be done again.

This time was taken to another dealer with the correct pullers and no problems since !

+Thanks for the advice,it pretty much confirms what I've been told.I'll have to find someone round here capable of doing it with the proper tools.
Sorry Ali but the manual never came through,I had problems with the software on the e-mail anti spam thingie on this computer,it might have blocked or deleted it by mistake.
