MORE English and Welsh people want Scottish independence than the Scots themselves, a shock poll for The Sun reveals.
Just 29 per cent of Scots want to go their own way - compared with 41 per cent of other Britons.

Bitterness over the estimated £5billion a year paid in subsidies to Scotland by other UK taxpayers appears to be behind the mood.

The poll found that nearly three out of five English and Welsh are convinced that Scotland benefits more from the Union than they do. And less than one in seven - 14 per cent - think that England and Wales would be economically worse off if Scotland broke away.

Around 43 per cent of Scots say England and Wales would be worse off if they had home rule.

Nearly half of all Scots think their nation would suffer financially if they got independence, with just 28 per cent thinking they would be better off.

The poll comes after Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond's pledge to hold a referendum by 2015 on the issue of home rule. His pro-independence Scottish National Party had a huge victory in last week's election.

Meanwhile PM David Cameron yesterday vowed to keep Britain together.

Sun poll ... just 29 per cent of Scots want to go their own way
He said: "Being part of the UK is good for Scotland."

He told MPs that an independent Scotland would lose all subsidies and would also have to take on a significant share of the national debt.

But Scotland's Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told The Sun: "The latest figures show Scotland with a current budget surplus of £1.3billion, while the UK as a whole had a deficit of £48.9billion."

The YouGov poll quizzed 1,175 Scots and 2,159 English and Welsh adults over the past two days.

an independent Scotland would remain outside the EU until it had completed the formal application process - in the same way as Eastern European states have done in recent years.

Scotland, as an applicant state, would have to sign up to the euro because that's what all applicant countries have to do.

hmmm

Mr Borg said:
On the issue concerning Scotland's independence, that's not my competence to assess or to evaluate

Mr Salmond said:
"Scotland is already a member of the EU and that would continue. It is not easy to leave the EU, as we saw with the attempts by Greenland when they won autonomy from Denmark."

Indeed, so could you please get on with that vote.

We can't wait another four/five years.

How much of the £1.3 billion would they have left after they have paid their share of the national debt back :?

We have 5 years, no rush :P

See it like a game of chess, Alex Salmond is like a pawn in the corner of a chess board with all the big boy unionists surrounding him, one by one wee Alex takes them out and then suddenley David the king of the unionists makes his move?

Trust me Alex Salmond is like a pawn on a chess board getting ready to call CHECK?

The question is will it be a STALE mate or CHECK mate :?:
