It’s my first post here so sorry if it is in the wrong category.

I need some advice about taxi insurance, it will be my first taxi insurance and I wondered if I could transfer my 3 years of car no claims over. If not, do you know how much I can expect to pay? I am a 21 year old female (yes I can hear the roars of laughter, which is a common response – just so you know, I have always wanted to be a cabbie and 3 years at University just confirmed it). I have budgeted £5k for the taxi, should I be budgeting the same for insurance or is this just an impossible dream. Will I even be able to get insurance?

My dad is a cabbie also, so should I start part time on his insurance and wait a few years? Although, I would really like to be a full time driver and obviously there will be an issue of fronting if he heads my policy.

I amazed that he hasn't warned you off the trade.

Insurance for a first timer is going to be very expensive, especially at 21 years of age.

I would guess about £3,000 a year upwards and you'll probably get loads of brokers and insurance companies refusing to quote.

Which licensing area are you in?

I will be working in Derby(midlands) when i get my badge.

He hasn't warned me off the trade as such, said it has declined in recent years but it doesn't particularly bother me, I intend on pulling long hours as i am certainly not afraid of hard work.

I am going to start making a few enquiries with insurance companies but I saw a few websites that only quote for 25+. Suppose i have to take the hit of high insurance AGAIN, and that's if i actually manage to find an insurer. Sigh! Will possibly have to go on as 2nd driver and work a few hours here and there.

I suppose i should take something to combat heart attacks before phoning around.

Doubt they will transfer your no-claims, but you can but ask.

Try the links on TDO's front page. You might spend a day or so ringing around, but it could save you hundreds.

You should be able to find an insurer if you have a badge, but it's certainly the case that 25 is a significant age as regards premiums as well.

I don't really get your point about working part-time though; I doubt if that would affect the premium much, or do you mean that you can't both work your Dad's car full-time?

Mind you, part-time to start with might be a good idea; you might then decided that your life-long ambition wasn't such a good idea after all

I am a taxi insurance broker as well as a PH driver. I don't reveal which insurance broker I work for but am always happy to chip in any thoughts.

There is one scheme underwritten by Aviva through TFP Schemes that gives a big discount off their normal rates if you have take the Driving Standards Agency Taxi Assessment. This costs about £80. Even if not required by your council, it is compusory with some for new drivers, the discount it generates can sometimes mean it is £80 well spent. I will try and find out if they will consider someone your age with the DSA test.

Is it Derby City you are going to be licensed by?

Other companies I know will take you are Sabre Insurance and Tradex.

Aviva are good to tick the right boxes and to sell the policy.

But from personal experience they do not like to deliver

2 non fault accidents in 12 months, claims not yet settled. At renewal, despite paying for protected NCB my insurance shot up from £1000 to £2900. (they say NCB still intact but policy loaded) Additionally my garage who did the work over a year ago are still chasing Aviva to be paid. Would never have touched them if I had realised Aviva was the old Norwich Union...renowned for paying out of your policy at the slightest tap.

Sorry Miss-taxidriver but I think you could be in for a shocker regarding insurance costs! I don't pretend I have many answers for driver's your age, even in an ordinary car. For the tai assuming you will be licensed by Derby City, I couldn't find anything under £10,000! I'm sure there will be someone so best of luck.

Responding to Nemisis, in my experience all insurance companies foul up from time to time, it show they rectify problems that is the true measure I guess. As far as protected NCB is concerned, all companies are the same in my expereince and most if not all are now regarding non fault accidents as an adverse feature. Sadly some of the fraud is creeping into "non fault" claims causing big issues. Frequency of claims is now as much a rating factor as to whether they are fault or not.

miss TD, id dads a cabbie, and has his own car, why not car share/double shift it for a bit?

thanks all for your replies, I am going to be a 2nd driver and my dad's taxi for a while as some companies won't insure till i am 30 - more sensible option

For two jobs - I have many answers for driver's your age, even in an ordinary car.
My 08 tdi Golf is £600 fully comp for the year (me as main driver), so i haven't found it difficult finding reasonable car insurance.
