Now I don't particularly like the fella, and he came across as a tit at the Transport Select Committee, but reading the latest edition of the LTDA's 'Taxi' magazine (page 2), I see that the charity that does brilliant work taking kids on an outing has refused John Griffin's cheque for £500.

http://www.taxinewspaper.co.uk/downloads/Taxi_247.pdf

The bloke writing the article is coming across as a tw** of the highest order, and turning down money from someone who works in a different part of the trade, for the sole reason that he works in a different side of the trade, is quite shameful.

If he has that opinion then best he writes his own f***ing cheque for £500 to replace Griffin's. [-(

Hmm,
Intersting that the committee voted to accept the money and then someone decides to send it back. Did the committee have another vote?
Is it just a big city thing that divides the trade into 2 distinct parts who are always at war with each other? We don't have this problem in our small town where company's like mine run both Hackney and Private Hire without any problems at all.

I can well understand why the two sides in London don't see eye to eye, but this is taken it too far.

I would have taken his money, and asked for more next year.

FFS it's a charity.

Exactly. By refusing this money, it's the kids who are losing out.
They should have taken the money and said "cheers, but we still think your a c*nt"

I suppose they see it as an ethical dilema. The same as say a cancer charity accepting money from Imperial Tobacco.

I don't think so. Tobacco causes cancer.
Minicabs do not affect the cause being promoted here.
The personal dislikes of the organisers should not get in the way of the cause.

Griffen doesn't give a [edited by admin] about underprivileged children, the sole purpose of that cheque was yet another attempt to legitimise himself as a taxi operator opposed to a Minicab operator.

The cheque (£500 from a man who has tens of millions) was solely designed to cause division. There are thousands of charities out there that will bite his hand off for money, he chose our one with the sole intent of causing a stink, he's good at that.

Our Taxi charities are amply funded by Londons cabbies, if we want money made from slave labour and deception, we'll go to Romania, just like he does for his next batch of drivers.

That's the problem Mr Sussex, you don't see half of it from your town by the sea.

But don't worry, the cash has been replaced a dozen times over since Griffen got his donation back, our charities are not short by any stretch of the imagination.

Griffen and his millions are quite at liberty to start a Minicab based fund for whoever they like, but they don't, and never have done.

Thats because we invest three years of our life into learning our city, history, roads, points, seperate driving test, WAV vehicles, wheelchair tests, dozens of one to one appearances with an examiner . . .

And the other side fill in a piece of paper and call themselves London Cabbies.

I agree but by refusing the money they make themselves look petty and vindictive, thus handing Griffen exactly what he wanted and at no cost to him.

They should have just cashed the cheque and threw his money in the pot with the rest.

I'd take money off the devil himself if it were used for a worthy cause.

Different spin on the story to the one I heard.

I heard someone sent out the usual letters to taxi radio circuits, trade suppliers and cab garages......cheekily they also sent one to addison lee.

They got a £500 cheque by return of post from Mr Griffin at addison lee and still await money from the rest.

Interesting story on page one regarding the CRB checks and TFL's current stance.

For years they insisted on group 2 medicals for private hire drivers whilst allowing HC drivers to have group 1.

Incidentally and for the purposes of fairness, I cannot see any reference to Radio taxis, Dial a Cab or Computer Cabs having private hire vehicles or how much they paid the fund.
