Private-hire drivers robbed at knifepoint in north Liverpool

Men police would like to speak to after private-hire driver robberies in Kirkdale

KNIFEPOINT robberies of two city private-hire drivers were today being linked by police.

A 61-year-old private hire driver was robbed of his night’s takings and mobile phone after being targeted in the early hours of yesterday morning.

One of the passengers, who were picked up from Lind Street in Kirkdale, threatened the driver with a knife while the other stole the cash in Index Street, Walton.

Both men then fled towards Goodison Park.

Officers are connecting the robbery to a similar raid on June 28, when a 40-year-old cabbie was held at knifepoint on Tolpuddle Way, Kirkdale.

The victim had picked the men up from outside the Royal Oak pub on Spellow Lane at 9pm and when they reached their destination they stole cash and a sat nav from him.

Merseyside police today released CCTV of men they would like to speak to.

Detective Constable Andy Bason said: "These were both violent incidents that have resulted in two hard-working men being robbed of their takings and subjected to a very distressing ordeal.

"We believe these were planned attacks and the addresses the offenders said they wanted to go did not exist.

“It is obvious they knew the layout of both estates, so it is possible they are from this area.

"I cannot discount the fact that both these offences were committed by the same men and I'm sure that the public would agree that those who are prepared to use knives should be brought to justice.
