we took it into a garage for a oil-leak fix and it may be significant that he topped up the gearbox oil

Sadly the invoice does not say and I am not going to confront him. He is hardly going to admit it and I can do without the hassle. He is a bona-fide Englishman in Sweden with his own 'English Car Care' garage. Charges a small fortune too. But he knows hios stuff so I struggle to believe he would have done it....but there is another guy who works there of course......

On the fuel side, the pipe leak was definitely not there before as I heard it easily this time. I would have heard it before. Pumping the new filter also did not work until I fixed the pipe - pressure did not come - it hissed out the pipe. Oddly, before changing, I got pressure with the old one and no hiss. Nothing happened to the pipe during the change so I can only assume I now get even more pressure ! All very confusing. I guess I should swap the old one back in to discover if it really was the pipe...........but that won't really achieve much and I might break it !

ETA for new transmission oil circa end of month.

So, I get myself a loan and a load of Dexron 3. I've read other similar entries on these forums with comments from your good selves about replacing the transmission oil and the need to replace the gubbins, but I figure that if I only change the oil and it works and then I have to change it and the filter soon, that's OK. No point finding a filter etc and then realising it does not work.

So, under the taxi, having spotted the difference between the transmission pan and the engine oil pan, I unscrew the nut. Dirty browny red oil comes out. Does not smell of cherries or burnt. Just smells ! BUT, there is only TWO litres. My book says SEVEN litres needed. Sure, it's still dripping, but it ain't gonna drip 5 litres surely ! The dippity stick said it was OK and if you remember the garage had just topped it up.

So. I must be being really dumb. I cannot have lost 5 litres of transmission fluid ! This means

a) the book is wrong
b) I cannot read
c) I am misunderstanding it
d) I have lots of spare Dexron 3 and didn't need that loan (was only kidding on that anyway. 5 quid a litre I can just manage. After payday)

Answers in a space below here much appreciated !

I could only get a few litres out of mine when I tried draining it,some stays in the torque converter.I filled it back up with fresh fluid, then ran the engine for a bit and drained and refilled again.
The old bfluid was black, after refillng and draining again the fluid remained pretty clean so I guess most of the debris ends up in the gearbox pan.

With hind sight I should really have unbolted the pan and changed the filter,it's another of those jobs that is now relegated to "around to it" that will probably improve things when it happens.

Great, that is reassuring thanks. I'm going to give it a go without the new filter as it is only a couple of litres and I've got 8 to play with ! And I can't find a filter yet. And the summer is over in Sweden and the garage is getting colder ! I also have some wyns transmission stuff to bung in which may help.

Will let you know

Now, it's a good job I'm a christian man or a certain local mechanic who charges nigh on £100 an hour and broke my taxi, then charged me £300 to not fix it, would be feeling my wrath right now. 18 months she's been sat in the garage as I have devoured possible solutions and contemplated getting a gearbox shipped from the UK.

Two lites of new Dexron 3, a can of Wynns transmission, a couple of tootles up the road and she's purring like a kitten and changing gear smoothly.

Staggered. Almost embarrassed. But very very happy. Now just need to fix the indicators, get her tested again and then think about paying the extortianate monthly fees here to keep her on the road.

Thanks all for your help.

So, the weather warms a little and I think it is time to get the taxi out of the garage. Dead battery. OK, no problem. I charge it. It charges, but ignition light looks weak and when I turn the key, it 'growls' at me whilst the glow plugs charge and then the yellow lights go out and nothing happens when I turn the key.

I swear NOTHING has changed sinec she last roared into life, except me charging the dead battery. I am guessing I have some kind of bad connection or a short though. Thoughts anyone?

Man........................

Is it just clicking ? If so sounds like a starter problem. You can jump the starter with a screwdriver by touching it across the two terminals on the front of starter ,be carefull of where your fingers are though !

Perhaps I shouls stick to my Skoda too? Sadly that has its own annoying electrical problem whereby the main lights are on all the time (as well as the parking lights, which are on by default, it being Sweden) but when you turn the dash lights on, all the beams go off. So, you cant see how fast you are going in the dask without a torch. This makes it fail its MOT and the garage cant fix it either. So, to the Skoda dealer tomorrow with a prayer at is becomes illegal to drive on 11th.

I hate cars. I especially hate electronics.

Its not clicking. It goes grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr when you turn the key for as long as you turn it.

Try arcing the starter as i said, make sure the key is in the on position, then get a long screwdriver and touch it across the two terminals till it sparks and turns over.Sounds like its sticking and this should free it up.Or if you dont fancy that give the starter a couple of whacks with a hammer !

That may make sense as I dont get that 'click' when I connect the battery. That said, the grrrrrrrrrrrrr comes whilst the glow plugs are charging and I really do think it's a low charge thing from the dregs of my memory. Still, age is doing me no favours in that department.

I'll work out which bit is the starter motor and report back.....................
