a friend of mine who is a hackney took a job to a different are 60 miles away, once he dropped of he pulled round to mcdonalds in the high st parked his cab at the back of the taxi rank was away for approx 15-20mins when he returned he had a parking ticket, the sign at the rank stated no stopping at anytime except taxis nothing about local licensed taxis only

is there any rules to say if you take an out of area job and you need to use toilet or get something to eat before you return

If you are out of area you use a car park or public parking area. If you park on a taxi rank, even in your own area you should get a ticket. Because if you are on a rank you are available for hire.

I think if he was parked on one of his own ranks then a good case could be made at appeal.

The mere fact that he was parked up on a rank not in his own area would lead him to be laughed at at an appeal.

I don't think I know of any cab driver who would appreciated a cab from another area parking on their area's ranks.

A case could be made for illegally plying.

Are you not supposed to be "in the vicinity" of your cab on a rank in your own area? Why then is he surprised that he got ticketed in another after 15-20 mins absence?

If he's out of his area he cannot park on any part of any rank in another licensing authority.

Leaving the cab there whether it is attended or not will incur a FPN.

Parking a cab and leaving it unattended on any part of any rank within your own area will also incur a FPN.

I should know, it happened to me many years ago when I just popped to House of Fraser and was a lot longer than I thought I would be.

I paid the ticket; I advise your guy should do likewise.

The law for leaving your cab unattended is you have to be in sight of your vehicle
