New safety checks for Redditch taxis adopted

NEARLY two years after first being mentioned new safety checks for Redditch taxis have been finally adopted.

Redditch Council’s plan to adopt the safety checks were first tabled in January 2010, following a series of poor spot checks of the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire fleet.

The move was met with widespread animosity by taxi drivers who raised concerns about the rise in costs as well as waiting time for the checks, to be carried out by the council itself.

Last week at a licensing committee meeting councillors voted in favour of an amended re-test fee.

A spokesman from the RTA (Redditch Taxi Association) said they were disappointed and that they would be meeting to discuss what action they would now take.

The new proposals will come into force from September 1 with a review of fees and charges and the service following the first six months.
