Taxi driver admits guilt over death

A TAXI driver has admitted causing the death of Halifax teenager Lisa Saville by careless driving. The 19-year-old suffered fatal head injuries during an incident in the early hours in City Lane, Wheatley, on March 4 this year. Miss Saville is understood to have been out with friends before catching a taxi from Halifax town centre.

The taxi driver, Jawaid Iqbal, 42, was originally charged with causing the teenager’s death by dangerous driving, but his guilty plea yesterday to the alternative allegation of causing death by careless driving was accepted by the prosecution following consultation with the police and the victim’s family.

Iqbal, who is currently living in the Worcester area as a condition of his bail, was assisted during the hearing at Bradford Crown Court by an interpreter. Judge Christopher Batty warned him that all sentencing options including custody would be available to the judge who deals with his case on August 23.

Iqbal’s bail was extended by Judge Batty, who also imposed an interim driving disqualification on the defendant.

Thousands of people posted messages on tribute sites dedicated Miss Saville following her death. The popular young woman was a student at Holy Trinity Senior School and Calderdale College and worked at the Hairy Lemon bar in Lord Street, Halifax.

Two Facebook memorial sites were launched for the teenager, while family and friends also continue to leave messages and tributes on a webpage dedicated to her on memorial website Gone Too Soon.

Your more likely to get a badge in Middlesbrough, if you don't speak English.

I sort of concur with what you are saying, but there are times in court when folks with perfect Queens' English can't understand what's happening.

And if you get an address wrong it's bad, but not as bad as going to jail.

Isn't that one of the reasons for having legal representation?

Indeed, but when in the witness box in front of a jury you don't want to say something wrong.

Taxi man sentenced for fall death

A taxi driver sobbed as he received a suspended prison sentence today after a teenage passenger fell out of his moving vehicle and died.

Jawaid Iqbal, 42, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving after Lisa Saville tumbled out of his moving vehicle and hit her head on the ground in City Lane, Wheatley, Halifax, in the early hours of March 4.

The 19-year-old had been on a night out with friends when a dispute took place over the fare which involved another passenger in the taxi.

Bradford Crown Court heard Daniel Briggs became "aggressive and abusive" with Iqbal and it was decided the taxi would pull over.

The court was told Mr Briggs, 25, punched Iqbal in the head before leaving the vehicle.

In a moment of "panic" Iqbal started to move off, leaving Miss Saville in the back of the taxi.

Judge Robert Bartfield told him: "Lisa was left in the back of the cab with the door open or partially open, you nonetheless drove on.

"You should have stopped. What you did was drive a passenger in your vehicle with the door open with the risk that they may seek to leave the vehicle.

"You drove off when you realised she was no longer there in the cab. You did not turn back to see what had happened."

The court was told Iqbal drove back to the taxi rank and later cleaned his vehicle.

The teenager was on the "very threshold of her life," the court was told.

The judge added: "Her loss is as devastating today as it was when she met her untimely death."

Iqbal, formerly of Glenholme Heath, Halifax, received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years and was banned from driving for a year.

He was also made to do 100 hours unpaid work and ordered not to enter Halifax during the period of the punishment.

The judge said no prison sentence would bring back Miss Saville, but Iqbal, would "have to live with this for the rest of your life".

The court was told Iqbal, who now lives in the Worcester area, had been psychologically affected by the tragedy.

During a short spell on remand he was seriously assaulted by fellow inmates, the court was told.

So now we all know that whilst being punched in the face the correct thing to do is sit and wait patiently until we are sure that all passengers have alighted safely.

Interestingly, it has been stated in the Court's evidence that Daniel Briggs hit Jawaid Iqbal in the head.

And yet, he has not been prosecuted for assault. Why!

He might have been cautioned or issued with a fixed penalty ticket.

Is that acceptable, hell no, but that's a remnant of New Labour I'm afraid.

I was hit by a car whilst standing on a taxi rank. I was interviewed by the police for allegedly kicking the car, which I didn't. The driver was never questioned for deliberatly driving into me.
