Every week I'm seeing the abuse of space saver tyres on Taxis (saloons) becoming more and more evident around my way. Now I thought these things, I call them things because they are no use for anything only to get you off to the tyre place to get your tyre fixed. They are also limited to 50mph I think

Anyway like I mentioned the abuse of these tyres is starting to get my back up big time, today I've noticed two taxis with space savers on them with fare paying passengers on board, now slap me with a wet sock filled with [edited by admin] but these drivers are playing with the fare paying publics life by using these tyres instead of getting another one fitted or the old one repaired.

I've seen a few accidents caused by space saving tyres giving up because they've been hammered and took beyond what they are designed for.

Is this a problem in any other area or is it just round here?

These have only recently been approved for use around here, but not with passengers aboard.
If you get a puncture and only have one of these, you must arrange another cab for your passengers.

Cops have instructions to stop any taxi with passengers using one.

They seem to think they are a normal tyre round here but, try to drill some common sense into their heads is like p!ssing in the wind.

We must have all wheels and tyres the same size, so if the car comes with a space saver, or what is becoming the other thing, a can of sealant, they must go and buy a full sized spare

Note the date and time and write to the Traffic division of the local police they will get onto the council about it and something might be done

The problem there though is where can you store a full size spare in a Car made to carry a space saver, Some Cars can..others cant......Them Fechin space savers are a complete waste of time and design, damned things ought to be banned from every new vehicle as dangerous.

You can fit a full sized tyre in a Mondeo wheel well.

This is illegal but:

If you put a "Space Saver Tyre" on the wheel that is used by your Meter to measure Distance ~ The Fare would be higher.

That's why in Mansfield they aren't allowed to use them under any circumstances.

They can be used down here in an emergency.

But if you use them with punters on board wave goodbye to your license.

Be a bit of a bugger for Joe punter rushing to the Airport if you leave him stranded in the Middle of nowhere as you drive off home at 3.30am with your space saver safely in place...and poor old Joe Punter left trying to work out the LA logic behind why you can drive your vehicle home whilst he misses his plane because he's waiting for another taxi to arrive...if one ever does.
