im looking for some advice on applying for private hire plates in glasgow and surrounding areas. From what im aware of, if your vehicle is licensed by glasgow city council, you are NOT allowed any type of signage on the car, i,e, taxi sign on the roof etc, but if your vehicle is licensed by south lanarkshire council then you can have taxi signage. Can anyone confirm if this is true. Secondly, if your vehicle is licensed by say south lanarkshire, can you still operate within the glasgow area driving for a glasgow firm,,,thanks all....

I would just give those councils around you a ring to find out their criteria.

Well different areas certainly have different rules regarding roofsigns and the like, so it's certainly not impossible. Don't know about South lanark, but i'm quite sure Glasgow doesn't allow PH roofsigns and the like.

As for your second question, the answer is probably no.

You can do one-off jobs within Glasgow, but not if you just base yourself there just to get round any rules that you may not like in Glasgow.

I thougt we are in the EU and that ment the free movement of goods and services and people within the EU block or does the EU rules not apply in Council Areas

Hi
In Glasgow the only sinage you can have is the companies name across the back window, in fact if you dont have this your car will fail its test. PH are now being allowed to have adverts across the back window.

You are not allowed any signs on the roof at all in Glasgow.

As for South Lanarkshire you can have the signs if your vehicle is a Taxi. In East Renfrewshire you can have door stickers (watch out for East Renfrew plated Hampend cars).

Each area is differant, just look at Geroge Sq on a Friday or Saturday night.

In Paisley PH cant have any sinage at all but every driver must wear a blue or white shirt with a plane tie.

Good luck in looking aroud for info.

regards

Of course it does, but you still have to adhere to whatever local licensing criteria exists.

If we didn't then I expect there would be many more cabs on London's streets than there is now.

Just to let you know the P.H. criteria here in Renfrewshire (Paisley, Glasgow Airport)

Cars older than five years will not be licensed unless they are wheelchair accessable ones which get eight
Not adverts at all on or in vehicles
No MPV's
No window tints
No tow bars

Drivers must wear a plain shirt, plain tie, plain dress trousers & dress shoes or you will receive a written warning & if the 'offence' is repeated risk losing your drivers license

You could try putting a stretch limo, Fire Engine, Ambulance, Sheriff Jeep or 'executive people carrier' on the road & the Council will ignore you & your drivers as already happens here

The most relaxed Council area seems to be East Dumbartonshire where any type of vehicle is allowed & all you have to display is a paper license on the inside of the rear window (even tinted ones!)

Cheers
