So you mean that all the stretch limos that have gone out of business in the recession could have avoided that just by raising their prices?

No, but they went out of business cos they didn't cover their costs.

If there is no work then it doesn't really matter what you charge, but it's pointless charging less unless you can generate new customers.

By the same token, if a downturn in taxi work has hit drivers and put some out of business, then how would a fare rise solve that?

Well it might, but then again it could just as easily mean less work and back to square one profits-wise or even less.

I don't see how the taxi trade isn't like any other business.

Your and Eddie's argument seems to be that if the trade could control the prices charged then no one need go out of business, but I don't agree, and indeed you just have to look at the wider business enviroment to see the evidence.

Is that what you think happened?

What bit are you referring to precisely, Grandad?

Yes, I had worked that bit out. That was why I quoted it and then asked you to be more specific

OK, just ignore my answer and get on with saying what you were going to say about what I said [-o<

Just got a message saying:

You may embed only 3 quotes within each other

It was still quite a short post.

You'd think that if they were worried about that then they would have set it up so that the length of the quotes was controlled rather than than the number of quotes.

But at least it will stop some of the ludicrous posts with umpteen lenghty embedded posts.

And for that we praise the Lord. \:D/

Drive to increase taxi fares before Christmas approved by councillors
By David McKay

Published: 15/09/2011

Taxi fares in Aberdeen will go up before Christmas after councillors backed a price increase yesterday.

The basic charge for a journey and fees for waiting times will rise – but a request from the trade to double a surcharge for train station pick-ups was thrown out.

Trade representatives welcomed the news last night, and said it would help address rising fuel costs and higher VAT rates.

Opponents argued that fares are already the highest among major cities in Scotland, and taxi operators should bear the higher price of petrol just like other motorists.

Members of the city council’s licensing committee voted 10 to four to approve the fare increase, the first the trade has requested since 2008.
