Taxi Driver Online

A long established firm in the great City of Brighton and Hove recently quoted a 65 mile job at £1.20 a mile, compared to the metered rate of £2.20 a mile. This 45% discount was offered for a one off job.

Is this a common price that is being used throughout the country, because if it is we all might as well park up our motors and sign on?

After the first mile it's only £1.30 per mile anyway here, all I can say is welcome to the real world As a general rule it's £1 per mile here for distance work. If you look at it as £60 in every £100 is clear earnings it takes approx 4hrs to do 100 miles return then that's still £15 per hour and there aren't many unskilled jobs paying that kind of money

Is it really £15 per hour?

Did your car cost you nothing, does your insurance come for free, does your car never need any maintenance, are you exempt from car tax, has the government also exempted you from paying income tax and national insurance, do you work on a circuit that allows you to work rent free?

Depends entirely on the local market though.

If I'm doing £6/8 vegetating on the ranks and doing the odd 1-mile job then if I get the chance to do a job grossing £30 and hour then it's a no-brainer.

My profit margin may be less with the long run, but what matters for a driver is how it translates into hourly earnings.

And if your point is that pricing at these kind of rates is detrimental to profit margins then your point about paying tax and NI is a non-sequiter, because tax and NI is only paid in profits.

Most Brum PH operators run at 90p or £1 a mile after the first mile, which is anything from £3.50 to £4.50.

That price is for all local work anywhere and is probably discounted below that for distance work.

Some contract work has been known to be accepted at 78p per mile.

We had one joker come to the rank yesterday wanting to go to Exeter (some 179 miles) from Brum Airport for £150. He eventually paid £280, which was still £103 under the book price.

The rate from BHX to Exeter on our meter during the day would come to £237.00 going straight down the M5.

Nice straight run that one, jobs like that have to be considered a days wage in most case's, lets work on the £237, that to me would say try for a bottle (£200) and no less than £180, even better if you can get full meter though.

Depends where the job is going.
I have a couple of regular punters that live out near me, who leave London in the early hours, so they get a massive discount, less than half the meter price.

But they've paid for my diesel for the day, plus dinner, plus I get a trip home with someone I know causes me no grief or worry.

If I bring a punter in from heathrow, which I seem to be working more and more nowadays ( ) I always offer them my card (another new route for me!) with a fixed price of £50 back out to the Airport, providing it isn't at silly o clock in the morning.

Taxi driving cant make you a decent living now, not with fuel up 40% in 18 months and insurances only rising
