As long as I have a family to feed, and a roof to keep over my head then I'm afraid I cannot do as you suggest as I'd soon be told where to go. As a "self employed" person (yes, i know It's just a way for owner/base to avoid paying NWM, holidays, etc) i have little to no rights and basically have to do as they say. There are pleny of folk round here ready to take my place.

Is it not possible to just rent a plated car in your area that you keep 24/7

Grandad, I think our friend is a PH driver so surely would need an operators license to get his own customers? In our manor the PH have to have the name of the firm on the rear passenger doors so he may not have that option.

Out of curiosity, what would be considered a good earning rate per mile including "empty" mileage. Where I am PH's use the same meters and rates as hackneys, not for long journeys out of area though. The meter rate is £3.78 for the first mile and £1.98 per mile thereafter.
