35% of 15% is 5% of turnover. If it were only that I could live with it.

The problem isn't fuel costs, it's reduced turnover.

Reduced because the economy is in the toilet.

Reduced because the smoking ban closed pubs and destroyed darts, pool and domino leagues.

Reduced because budget city centre hotels have replaced distant hotels with those now on the city centre's doorstep.

Reduced because the council took over our satellite town work with their increased buses and particularly nightbuses.

Reduced because private hire are eating into our customer base because folks are fed up when they can't get a taxi.

Reduced because the restriction of licences has sent our customers into the bosom of our competition. Punters think PH are taxis. And we've let them.

Reduced because the town is a mess. Has been for years now. Who wants to have a night out in the sh*t hole it now is.

Reduced because the out of town shopping centres are more attractive than the city centre where the big shops are reluctant to trade on our council vandalised main thoroughfare.

Reduced because alcohol is now so cheap, it's as easy to sit at home with a movie or the playstation, or footie on the telly, supping cheap ale rather than be ripped off by the extortionate pub prices.

Reduced because there isn't a shred of decency or common sense in a trade that is founded on greed and stupidity.

And that's just for starters Doom.

When your brain finally does come awake, the smell pervading your nostrils isn't coffee. It's decay.

Jasbar if it's that bad why are you still in the trade? Even if you get your wish of derestriction all those factors will be there with the exception that some of the PH drivers will become HC drivers so you'll still have the same competition and the same amount of customers. Being able to work whenever it suits you won't help either because everybody will be in the same boat

It did start for me anyway with the smoking ban,and has declined to what it is today,(earnings decline)the state of that town is a f*****G embarrassment,the state of the council is a joke,ph running riot with our work...EDINBURGH IS A LAUGHING STOCK !!!

You never really understood the argument did you?

It's one thing to operate in a restricted market, when you can't respond to market conditions and are tied to paying a rental for times the work just aint there, and it's quite another to work in an unrestricted market when you can be on parade when the customers are there to pay you.

Get it now do you?

This trade has always been a weather based, people in a hurry, weekend job.

And that's when someone with their own vehicle needs to work. That's where the reward is. And that's what restriction denies.

Drivers working when the customers don't need to, and customers denioed the service when they need it.

It's madness. And wouldn';t be tolerated in any other market sector.

Get it now?
