I'm 20 in a week and hoping to become a Taxi Driver.

Was going to wait until i'm 21 as it would be cheaper insurance.

Can anybody give me advice/tips?

Dont know if i'd need to buy a new car to start? How to get a licence? Cost's etc.?

I currently drive a Ford Escort 'R reg' TD Estate.

I really need a bit of help as i suffer from ME and Fibromyalgia and find getting a job hard so doing this when i can work (self employed maybe?) would be perfect as when i'm unwell i can have time off and work nights when i feel better.

I've had my licence 2 years on Sept 23rd and have 3 points.

Thanks

James :)

Get in touch with your local councils licensing Department, ask them for figure about licensing costs (driver and vehicle).

The decide which operator you'd want to work for and check out costs there as well.

Check with both that your car is suitable.

Double check your insurance, as it does sound very low for a 20year old taxidriver with no experience,

Then after you've worked out how much its going to cost you to operate, decide how much you'd need to take to pay all of your bills and put food on the table each week.

If you think that you'll be able to take more than your spending then go for it mate, we all moan like [edited by admin] about the trade but we love it really.

I'm sure there are members from your neck of the woods who'll be able to offer better more relevant advice, just give them a few days as they need to count all their money before they post on here.

Thanks :)

Can i get a licence and work on my own without joining an operator?

Or do i just join an operator give them x amount a week and work when i want?

Also how much are the licences do you know and what are any tests like?

I hope i'll be able to afford to do it as i can only really do driving jobs. I did do a delivery driver job but was only getting about 3 deliverys a night and was'nt worth it in the end. Sure taxi driving would be different though :)

look laddie you should be backpacking, not tying yourself down in a trade thats in decline and sitting for hours on end to be someones lacky.

lets start on your qualifications, have you held a license for 2 whole years? if not you dont qualify!

do some research find out what its all about dont just ask failures like us on here

you find yourself at the centre of a little argument, its not your fault so dont worry about it.

If you want advice the GA's was sound.

Personally, perhaps you should consider working for someone to start off with, then if you like it, take the plunge.

regards and the best of luck with whatever you decide

Captain cab

Well I think that's why he's asking for advice on here?

Perhaps he should be praised for his initiative and given some genuine advice.

Part of the site's remit is to offer advice, I can't see why this has to be confined to the more experienced trade members.

These days if I want to find some advice on topics I know jack about I often use the net.

if you have an illness taxi driving is not for you there is heavy lifting, fighting for your life, social work, and lots of strong odours

backpacking is easier, travel the world b4 you are too old to regret it.
