I am no closer to purchasing a car. I have pretty much discounted the Prius ( 1.8 ) following a test drive.

It's nice at low speed and pulling away smoothly, but it's not very refined accelerating hard onto the motorway and I can't see it being that economical or refined on a 70 mile airport run.

Back to square one.

A skoda octavia 1.9 tdi will do that on under 2 and a half gallons at 70 MPH if its 70 miles each way

The two best cars for PH are:

The Skoda Superb and the Ford Mondeo.

If you need an estate, then even better.

The Council's Specification seems to be unambiguous.

Your choices do not fit it, what else is there to say.

Sussex has probably got it about right.

Certainly seems the case round here. There's been a handful of other makes but they don't last long, a couple of Toyotas (which the owners were impressed by) a Citroen C5 and the usual Peugeots. All dissapeared after less than a year on the road to be replaced by Skoda/Mondeo. Looking at the Toyota that was on I'm surprised it didn't last longer, it was a lovely car for a taxi and I thought they were supposed to be one of the most reliable.

There are two other private hire companies in the village - they might be on here ? I am trying to find a USP between the two firms. Once running an Insignia and the other more executive with S-class and V-class. I am not trying to tread on their toes - could I approach them for work sharing and if so , what's the best way to approach them ?

Write/e-mail/phone or visit (best to visit them so they can see you and your car) and tell them about yourself, what you drive, and that you're available on a sub-contract basis, and that you are able to help them out when they're busy.

What sort of terms would you offer a counterpart ? £5 a job ? Or you scratch my back and I will scratch yours...

Depends on the job, or more likely what the existing payer is bunging them. :-$

Sussex - I finally managed to get an answer from the council ; I am 'allowed' any E class provided it's in immaculate condition and that I intend to do executive hiring and distance work.

So following some guidance from Chris (on here) I am now looking for a 2007 E class.

I wish you well.

That said I'm not sure a council has the powers to dictate what sort of work you do, providing you are licensed.

But if you are happy with that, then good luck to you.
