I can only assume that the perpetrators were brought up in a strictly regimented / instituional environment which has left them unable to function as an individual in a civilised society. As such, they must erect artificial barriers in order to appear to fit in with the real world.

There is a lot of truth in what you say here Dave. Many of the kind of postings you refer to seem to bring out the very worst in people and a form of bullying runs through their often offensive invective. They seem impervious to reason and just churn out the same diatribe as though anything anyone says to them has no meaning. They seem to want you to take in what they say and choose to ignore what is said in return, except possibly to use it against its author.
Your posting was well put and sums up these people very well. I think they know who they are and their replies (if any) will only confirm the position. In some other lists, where a reasonable standard of conduct applies, they are simply, and to my mind quite justifiably so, excluded.
This may sound a bit heavy, but surely the other subscribers should not have to put up with or suffer from such unreasonable conduct? They will not always see the offending bits until they have gone half-way through reading the posting. Anyone not happy with the authors of such material could of course just delete all postings from these persons but where does that take the list forward?
A Moderator/Administrator's nightmare I suppose and could leave them open to the accusation of hindering the freedom of speech, but where should the line be drawn?
