Ok, Just got qualified as a spark and the arse drops out of the trade!!!!!!! just my luck!!!!!!

Have been looking at PH for a few years as a possible career short or long term not sure yet.

Been and applied with the council for a PH licence, had my medical, started on the Davey Liver course (NVQ) and will be driving with them once I have it.

Any hints an tips that arent on the site already from anyone?

Im taking a settle car at first, £290 PW for a reasonably newish vectra, that good or bad?

£100 for just the radio if I get my own taxi, couldnt use my own car as its a gas guzzler! Fiat stilo 1.6 16v estate!

Any help appreciated

Look after the punters and generally they will look after you.

If a job looks or feels iffy then don't do it.

If you are working nights then be careful, and get money up front if you go out of town. Say it's company policy.

If I were you I'd look at setting up as a self-employed mechanic, there's garages round here that will rent you a ramp per week to start off with. There also seem to be a lot of jobs going for MOT testers, perhaps a little more training would be worthwhile ?

As Toots said the cab trade aint too good at the moment, with no sign of improvement soon. The settle of £290 p/w does seem a little high, all depends on how much you pull each week though as to whether it's reasonable. If you get your own vehicle for £100 radio then that leaves the other £190 you would have spent on rent for the cost of your own car +fuel/insurance/tax/mot/pit/maintenance/license etc. You could also then rent the car out to another driver (for the £290) which more than covers your weekly costs.

Curious to know if there is a joining fee as well as the radio rental. There is to get on a good circuit around where I work.

You have to pay a joining fee so you can then pay them x amount a week for a radio, it sounds like a gym membership ffs

Taxi drivers and gym membership!!! you will need to speak a different language if you expect people to understand. So just for CC that would be golf club joining fee and still having to pay green fees.

I'm in Liverpool, and have been told that it's not that bad at the minute, not brilliant but not terrible!

So only one person spotted my deliberate mistake ! Gawd knows where I got mechanic from, think I got my sparks and sparkplugs mixed up.

We all spotted it but chose not to embarass you any further because we are nice like that.

By the sound of it this may be a bit of a shocker for some areas, but in a couple of towns around here it will cost a non refundable payment of £5000 to get a car on the circuit. You can opt to by a share in the firm which can be traded like any share in a bona fide ltd company but allow £30000 ish.

I know that but I've never heard of a joining fee in Merseyside that's why I raised the question and I'm also curious as to how much this fee is

No mention of any joining fee, I talked to one of the directors, he said its £290 a week for the car, radio, insurance etc and what I make is Mine, minus the diesel of course!
