The taxi trade in Edinburgh, has been on a downward spiral for at least five years and especially the last three years. There is no upside. A combination of increased competition, the global recession and a sea change in peoples attitude to money has sucked out any financial incentive in doing the job. Think, very carefully about how driving a taxi will impact on your family as you will probably be living in the taxi to make ends meet. It's far from easy these days.

However, if you are set on giving it, a go, try it part-time for a year or so before jumping in with both feet.

TBH, if I were you, I wouldn't bother. :-|

Just don't understand why if there are so many people out there havin that bad a time why do they even bother ? Surly the council regulate the amound off taxi's out there so drivers earn a decent living ?

But unless you get a free plate all that happens with regulating the amount of taxis is that you pay higher rentals or you end up with the albatross of a £40,000 loan to buy a plate.

Quote:
Don't think things r quite as bad as some drivers make out to stop people tryin for test if there buyin plates that are already issued as it wouldn't affect or change the number off cabs lookin for work in the city...

You mean if a few hundred people like yourself suddenly entered the trade it wouldn't affect everyone's takings

It would just mean the existing number of taxis would be on the road more, driving down takings.

At a rough guess I would say you could earn the kind of money you're looking for, but you won't earn it doing Monday-Friday 9-5.

If your'e after an honest opinion ? I wouldnt, im not trying to be negative but as dug says there is a lot of guys trying to get out,not as easy as it sounds, the longer you are in the harder it is to get out,you get set in youre ways, the hours you will have to put in will be soul destroying people will invite you out you wont be able to go coz of course you'll be working, then theres the no sick or holiday pay, sorting out youre own tax and ni,the ones who are saying they are making fortunes still are simply LYING!!! Of course the part time option might work if youre in a job just now !!

What he means is that you can't get a plate unless you buy one, which will cost you at least £40k or so with cab.

So unless you have that kind of money in your piggy bank or you own a house which is worth a lot more than what's left on your mortgage - which would be used by the bank as security for a loan - then you can't buy a plate.

Which may be just as well because if the council ever pulled the plug on the limit on plate numbers then repaying the loan would become a bit more of a problem.

I would say that if your in a company then you should make about £400 per week after deductions for working 5x12 hour shifts if one includes a Friday or Sat night.

I done just over £400 on sat for 13 hours and I know loads who made about the same for roughly the same hours but that was a very very busy sat night. I would look for £300 on a sat after fuel but then you take off about £70 for rent. During the week you can do about £180 before fuel and rent so you take home would be about £100.

Dont know what the street cars do so most on here could advise better. They are right though saying income is not the same as say 5 years ago

Well I was trying to make dinner for 4 people at the same time. Long and short is £300 should be a min for the week. I would post my weekly earnings but I would just get the usual abuse!

I think Funguy, is one of those with the big redundancy pay off or with the wife on a good salary steadying the ship. A sort of, all his eggs are double yokers kind of guy. It's true to say that everything is relative to your own personal circumstances, but certain people need to gloat in order to have recognition for what they consider to be, their “success." “Look at me, I'm so wonderful I bet you wish you were doing everything right, just like me, I'm making a fortune.” #-o

funguy

so ur saying you take home 100 a day during the week after bills and 300 on a sat ??????

come on a know nothing about the black cab game but 700-800 a week sounds a bit much ..

why as others have said above would drivers be in a Q to get out the trade if they figures were realistic ...

others have said 300 is sometimes a struggle in 60 hours work and ur sayin 700 after bills atleast in 72 hours :?:

You wouldn't be overly popular.
