My £42 EBay unit works just fine, it also records sound unlike the £800 systems.

I used it in a complaint last year, albeit it was a stupid drunk complaining about nothing.

The PCO said nothing about it being an 'unapproved' type, and promptly binned the complaint after they viewed his drunken bollox behaviour.

Result for £42, it payed for itself on that case.

The council are not going to be spying on you are they. The council will not have access to the cctv unless there is a problem.

Almost Agreed Grandad. I have to admire your faith in your licensing office. But I can see a day not very far away that Licensing officers with so much time on their hands in the days of post "One Tier Licensing" that it could become a regular driver review to take the CCTV SD card away for checking...if only to see it has been turned on the required 24/7 and answers demanded if not...will it soon be Tachographs and clocking on cards at the ranks too I wonder...but none of us have anything to hide so we would not mind any of that a bit would we? And do not forget, if your cameras are not working...then neither do you, for there shall surely be a condition that requires immediate suspension if found working without functioning Cameras then or in the past. I suppose we should welcome that as well? As someone here once said..."Be careful what you ask for!"

I would like to see them put in at the factory, in all hackneys that would be the cheper way or even in the meters were they cant be seen but they know they are there.

We have had the right to use CCTV since the year two thousand.... most of the cabs around here don't have them in any more... but they can if they want to.... I would be very dubious about placing any CCTV footage in hands of counsel employees... everybody makes mistakes, and those mistakes would be in the hands of the council.... it reminds me a little of the saying.... turkeys voting for Christmas.

If there has been a problem in a car with CCTV and an accusation has been made about a driver. Knowing that the CCTV is in place could also mean that if the driver knows that he is in the wrong, he could just own up without having to hand over the CCTV images.

Let's have a go and see what we can come up with :D .... first of all... apply to the council for permission for hackney / private hire vehicles to be allowed to be equipped with CCTV.... at their own cost  ... also stating that all recordings will be kept by the owner of the vehicle for an appropriate time.... say 28 days...( in 2000 I spoke to the Home Office regarding CCTV footage... they told me it would be the owner's responsibility... exactly the same as it is the shop owners responsibility.) nothing to do with the council.... you are not asking for it to be made mandatory ............ only a option that if the driver wishes.... he can put in place...... it is then not a condition of licence..... and if it is not working he could not be taken off the road..... .

Well you're filmed in the streets, on the tube, on the tains, on the buses, in the termini, on the ranks . . . so I figured passengers are imune to it in London, and I haven't had any real questions about it to date.

Even the PCO didn't question it.

Taxis & PH certainly need them to protect from malicious accusation...but at what price?

What price do you put on your liberty?
Why do some drivers think that cctv is there to spy on them? It should/would only ever be viewed if there were an incident. So unless you are a driver with something to hide, where is the problem?

let me say this wether guilty or not, how many drivers have won on a complaint against the public, never mind police officers. drivers need as much protection as poisbile.

Charlie, please allow me to ask you, in your dealing with Police and street cameras, how often are the vital camera views needed to clear a driver’s name claimed never working or facing the wrong way? Let’s not delude ourselves the cameras in the taxi will work any better to our benefit just because we pay for them. What is really needed is to have unbiased trade reps within the circle of data controllers should compulsory ever happen.
