Here is something Gedmay might find of interest, as an out of towner we have a permit for contract parking at T1 & T2, we have today 23-02-05 received our renewal info, they now tell us we have to have a permit and machine pass for EVERY vehicle, previously we could have two vehicles and machine passes for each permit (although only one vehicle could access the parking area at a time). Therefore they have increased the price of a permit by 100% at a stroke.
I wonder which permit will be next.

It will interesting to see how active the wardens are after 1st April with I feel many drivers not bothering to buy extra permits

The reality is that MAPLC want to take a cut from all the Taxi and PH operators who pick up from the Airport.
This is just the beginning.
From 2006/2007 the drivers who work at the Airport will pay per ''pick-up''.
i.e. Every time they come to the Airport they will pay a fee of say £1 to pick up a fare.
The council will probably allow this ''charge'' to be put on the meter to be paid by the punter.
If you dont like it tough !
We have ''Airportcarz'' to serve the punters.
No-one knows whats in their contract.
On the other hand Airportcarz will pack their bags and leave after losing hundreds of thousands as the public still dont want them !
Airportcarz are being used in their stupid belief that they can succeed whilst the hackneys are still around !!
Like their predessors they will fail.
BUT
MAPLC will achieve their objective of charging drivers per pick up.

Even if it started at £1, you can bet it will go up to the level nearer that charged at heathrow sooner rather than later.
Having said that don't compare Heathrow with Manchester.
The Heathrow drivers probably get more in tips than what Manchester drivers earn !!

The T &GWU have and still are campaigning for free and open access to all transport interchanges i.e airports and railway stations. Besides this area of campaigning the T & GWU has dedicated taxi branches fighting for all aspects concerning the taxi driver. For a small extra premium there is also a range of extra benefits covering a range of problems commonly encountered by todays taxi driver. I implore all taxi drivers to join the union and begin the fight against Manchester Airport and their proposed stealth charges. Dont forget your union fees are a tax deductable item. And for the record I am an ordinary member of the union and hold no position whatsoever!

I've no doubt there are some benefits to joining the T&G, but please remember some of the misleading information and false hope that they proffer.

Classic examples, mentioned umpteen times on here before, include:

The banner headline 'OFT KO'd' in Cab Trade News when the Govt had agreed with the OFT's de-limitation recommendation (albeit not made mandatory, yet!);

The same journal's summary of the Castle Point case, which was not only contained several factual errors, but fundamentally misrepresented the point of law decided;

False hope provided in relation to the possibility of legal action - for example, in the T&G's response to the OFT it held out the possibility of legal action to recover the loss of plate premiums on de-limitation, but this had been throw out in the earlier Royden v Wirral case, which involved T&G branch.

As an ordinary member they've also misled you about this Mr Penn, since the union supports closed access to Brighton station, because it suits its branch members there.

But this double standard is typical of the T&G's stance, best seen in relation to restricted taxi numbers.

Thanks for your reply. I will contact T&GWU representative shortly and seek clarification. I was not aware of this but put it down to being away from the North West and the local publications circulation.
