We already have 55'000 foreign nationals runnning around London in Minicabs, and I'm still rammed out with customers who prefer us to them.

You see John, people like quality and not chaff in old London Town, and are williing to pay top dollar as well, even four years into the 'recession'.

Besides, we won't let them.

So you wouldn't mind if PH were allowed to ply for hire then :D

That might happen legally if the Law Commission get their way.

Cabbies split over call for 20 per cent Games fare rise

Protest: Jonathan Myers, of the United Cabbies Group, pickets outside the Standard's Kensington office

Black cab drivers were today divided over demands to charge passengers 20 per cent extra during next summer's Olympics and Paralympics.

A group representing about 2,000 drivers has attacked the main trade body's claim that cabbies would be "encouraged" to work during the Games if they could earn more.

The Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association claimed that up to half of London's 25,000 drivers will take time off during the Games after being denied a series of concessions by Transport for London, including access to priority "zil" lanes.

But the United Cabbies Group said that the reputation of drivers would be irreparably damaged if the fare rises were imposed.

In a picket at the Standard's Kensington offices yesterday the UCG accused the LTDA, which has about 9,000 members, of a "politically-motivated" campaign. Jonathan Myers, a spokesman for the UCG, said: "We've had people getting in our cabs asking about the rises. I had one customer who called us opportunist [edited by admin]."

LTDA spokesman Steve McNamara said: "TfL were worried they were not going to have enough cabs so they asked what can we do. We said to give us access to the zil lanes, but they said they couldn't do it. We suggested they could try paying the blokes more money. Everyone is now convinced we are going for 20 per cent, which we're not, it was a suggestion."

A consultation on the increase proposals ends this month.

I get the feeling the Evening Standard are doing this themselves to sell newspapers.

No, you work for one of many companies that supply buses under the TFL banner.

Perhaps your individual company is'nt, but others are / may depending if the drivers stick together.

See, there's some Flanagan in me too.

First it was the RMT taxi branch claiming thousands of members when the actual figure is about 250, now the UCG are claiming the same. :doubt:

I'll believe it when I see 'about 2000' drivers on the next demo.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I wonder what would have been said if TFL had allowed rate 2 (and that's all were talking about here) , the Evening Standard had said nothing, and it got more cabs worked during the 4 weeks of choas.

Probably very little.

None of my punters have even mentioned it.

On the 1st of April next year we receive a 5% increase through the annual fare review, The Evening Standard will do their usual sensationalist headlines about another fare rise, blah, blah, blah

And will people stop using Taxis, or even Minicabs (who increase their fares whenever they like) for that matter and use their two feet?

I doubt it.

As usual the Standard inflamed the public but no mention of the other parts of the Taxi Fares Document connected with the fare increase only 20% Ltda Oddy made a bad PR mistake but he maybe trying to take the publicity away from a very successful demonstration by United Cab Group and the RMT the day before.

Other parts of the Tariff Document were an £.0.80 or £.0.40pence per journey during the times connected with Olympics.
Connected with the TFL and LA's having no money, proposal that £.0.01 be added to meter journey, collected from the drivers licence fee every three years i.e. £.5.00. This fund being ring fence for use on the basis of 50% between La and TFL.

The 20% has cause a lot of discussion for and against with some not mentionable words against Bob Oddy.

Be Lucky

Those opposed to the LTDA say Oddy dropped a rather large clanger, those supporting the LTDA say Oddy is merely doing his job.
