Taxi drivers in Wolverhampton have been branded rude, ignorant and devoid of any communication skills – by the boss of Wolverhampton’s Central Taxis.

Some drivers were “atrocious”, relying on passengers to direct them to the most obvious landmarks. Others refused to leave their cars, repeatedly honking their horns at pick-up points instead.

Gerry Turner’s attack on drivers – including some of his own – was mirrored by the city’s Hackney Carriage boss who admitted: “Some don’t even know where Asda is.”

While many drivers were experienced and knew what they were doing too many new recruits were being licensed by the city council, Mr Turner said.

He said those now applying for jobs with his company lacked the basic skills needed to do the work, had little knowledge about the city’s roads network and often had to depend on passengers to direct directing them.

“We have had complaints from passengers about drivers being unhelpful and sadly lacking in communications and customer care skills,” Mr Turner said.

He added: “We want people who can do the job properly, but we are finding that the standard of some drivers is atrocious.”

Hackney Carriage boss Amrik Sekhon said: “Sometimes passengers get into a cab and the driver doesn’t even know where Asda at Molineux is.”

Licensing officer Elaine Moreton said they were concerned to ensure that drivers were competent and knowledge tests for applicants for permits were being strengthened

Wonder if they all complained when they had to sit their knowledge tests?

Some operators are fitting Sat Nav to all their vehicles then applying to the council for dispensation for any new drivers from sitting a "knowledge" test if they work for them.

Its a joke surely innit.
