A driver who was working for another firm in our town for the last 6 months and never made minimum wage came to work with our company last week. After paying the mileage fee for using our car she took home just over £10.00 per hour.

Is there a difference in what the two firms charge?

By that I mean does yours undercut her old one?

The way we charge for our cars is well documented on here. We charge by the mile driven and cover our costs so that drivers get to keep more of the money that they earn. We don't charge extortionate percentage of the bag. Drivers that have our cars are free to work the hours that they want and they are free to hand out their own cards so that they can build up their own customer base. Drivers that do school contracts for us are employed on the books.

Na, I didn't mean that, I meant is say 3 miles with you is £4 fare and with the other firm it's £5.50 for example.

We are both Hackney and running on the same metered fares.
There are now 4 compays in town that hire out cars to drivers.
1 charges drivers 40% of the bag plus £4.20 per shift for insurance. The driver puts the fuel in.
2 charges driver 55% of bag and the company puts the fuel in.
3 charges drivers 60% of bag and the company puts the fuel in.
4 charges drives 40 pence per mile for the first 200 miles and then 33 pence per mile for miles above 200. The company pays for the fuel.
All 4 companys pay for servicing and repairs for the cars.
Based on say a week of 7 shifts and covering 300 miles a driver in these parts would take in the region of £400.
so the take home for the driver would be,
1 £165.60
2 £180.00
3 £160.00
4 £287.00
The other difference is that with the first 3 companys the driver works the shifts that they are told to work and with company 4 the driver works the hours/shifts that they want to work.

£165.00 a week for working every day of the week, great wages if we were back in 1981, you'd be better off doing a newspaper round. Even using the calculations for the 4th option, you'd only be taking home £41 for each shift.

Some drivers who work days are taking home around £10-15 for a 8-10 hour shift.
The driver who has just started with us works Monday to Friday days from 10.00 to 14.00 to fit in with her childrens school times and she is working Friday evening from 22.00 till 03.00 and on saturday from 22.00 until 04.00 so she is only going to be working 31 hours a week. The drivers for the other companys are working between 60 and 70 hours a week for their money.

So 2 and 3 are breaking the law by not paying the min wage as they put the fuel in

Have any of the leicester firms tried to get into Melton yet I know 2 of them looked at Stamford a couple of years ago and decided better that might change things a little

charging by the mile does run a risk though because a couple of really heavy maintainance bills might mean cars running at a loss

I only have 1 part time driver renting a car at weekends and i charge him £30 a shift he pays fuel i won't rent to a full time driver any more because the car inevitably gets abused and wrecked and it just isn't worth it
