I had a very similar experience with my E7 - I noticed after resting the car up everything returned to normal - so out on a motorway coming back empty the same thing happened.I turned the engine off and coasted a few yards, and then turned it back on - hey presto it worked and the car accelerated as per normal.

Do not ask why because I do not know as to what or why it worked - but it did and has since.

It is probably resetting itself - or something - maybe.

If it went limp with the lights on the dash I'd say deffo an overboosted turbo, and that is caused by stuck veins inside it from too much urban carbon.

Na, you need to get it to about 60mph then floor it and hold it even though nothing is happening, if it goes into limp mode it's overboosted.

Some more thought on it, you could have a hole in the turbo hose, it only needs to be a pin [edited by admin] but it will still do the same thing.

You should have typed pinprick, rather than pin [edited by admin].

Although a word used by Shakespeare is deemed inapropriate for TDO?

Yeah, I kinda thought the censor would pick it up, still hopefully anyone reading knew what it was, you did. :D

What's in a name, by any other name would smell as sweet? :D

Many thanks for your advices gents...it still runs OK round town...just the plateauing on the motorway to contend "so far". There still has been no Engine MIL illumination. Only the OBD indicated presence of a fault code therein that I cannot get to read.

Worry that mentioned "over boosting" the turbo might blow it totally...is this a possibility?

There is some sort of valve on the turbo that I believe Mr Doom mentioned might be coked up...is this accessible and perhaps an easy job to clean? Is this an air or oil valve?

So as opportunity and funds permit its going to be;
1. Oil Flush followed by oil change & filter. Replace Air filter
2. If I can get the vehicle jacked high enough to clear my stomach get under and check those turbo hoses.
3. Try to get DIY OBD2 Elm 327 plug code reader working properly with laptop and see what the ECU is saying
4. Failing to get DIY OBD2 working take it down to main dealer for opinion and break open the credit card again...

I just know that sods law will kick in here and crock things up just before the "fortunes" awaiting the streets at Christmas, just why is "Sod" always hanging around the Taxi trade...if he is no good at nowt else he could always try as for LO! :O)

Will keep you posted if a cause is found

Be Lucky out there

Maybe it's just that your idea of "Speed" and its idea of "Speed" are not the same.

Hi Gobby
If your engine is the same as my two 406 HDI's, I had a similar problem on my 90 engine, a few years ago, which turned out to be a flow sensor.
On my110 I had an intercooler pipe split which caused similar problems but was obvious by the amount of black smoke being emitted!!
But very recently, having done a service, fitted a factor suppled fuel filter, I had all sorts of problems, loss of power, cutting out, engine management light coming on, checked with a friend at main dealer who suggested fitting Peugeot filter, which I duly did, problem solved!!.
That was about 4 weeks ago and no further problems.
Mick

Sounds like a crank sensor to me, I remember having the same trouble with a Mondeo some years ago, it turned out to be the crank sensor. A £10 quick fix.

Pleased to report a little closer to the gremlin...tonight whistling was heard bottom of engine gearbox side whenever turbo gunned...sounds like a split pipe...as Mr Doom suggested...well done that man! Just got to get under for a look and find some new pipes to fit. Been told its likely to be the short pipe out of turbo...but may have to buy the whole length.

split IC pipe (under EGR) is a very common Mondeo problem, duct tape is the answer....

Right! Fixed the bugger!
Many thanks guys for all suggestions, they pointed me in right direction...as also did begining a tin whistling heard in the cabin, starting up from low gearbox side of engine whenever Turbo cut in, or tried to.
Following the big hefty air hose from the turbo to intercooler radiator I thought this is where I shall find the culprit leak that did not whistle again when I had the hood up, after crawling under, pulling the fluff from my belly button on the diesel cooler and getting proper messy like I used to years ago there was not a sign of a pin [edited by admin], tear or similar anywhere along the entire length??? So ambled back up with suitable cursing to take a look from above...nothing? But there was a 10mm rubber hose going from intercooler pipe to a "TRANSMITTER INJECTION / SENDING UNIT F 9642789980" (nought clever...looked it up!) that I assume measures the intercooler vacuum / air pressure to bring the turbo in (I think?), it was sat hiding just under the air filter housing with two wires connected back to loom. The rubber pipe had a very slight hiss when the engine was gunned...so replaced the rubber pipe with an old length of reinforced fuel line...took it out for a spin...drives like it did when new!!!! Phew! Whether it’s this good resultant to the repair or the fact I previously had replaced the MAF sensor and threw 3 bottles of injector cleaner down its throat it matters not...driving the dream now....only remains to order the proper tube to fit and satisfy curiosity if I had the function of this “switch” correct? Any offers?
