Taxi Driver Online

It seems a bit of a grey area in law and Im wondering if anyone has any idea on the legal aspect as to passengers under the age of 16 wearing seatbelts in a taxi. It isnt possible to carry child seats of all sizes and isnt neccessary so I have been told but whats the law when a chaild of 2 3 4 year old etc gets into a taxi. Is it legal for a mother to travel with a young baby on her knee?

Would be grateful if anyone can shed any light on the legal aspect of carrying children and babies in a taxi.

I get people saying that their kids dont need a seatbelt as they never wear one normally. From my point of view this is a safety issue and I will refuse to take them but I am not sure of what the law says for kids of different ages in taxis.

Its a strange rule on public transport as buses dont have seatbelt but coaches do and I dont think trains have them either,

The recent set of under 16 requirements don't apply to the licensed taxi and PH trade.

In short we can carry any children of any age without the need for child-seats, unless the job is a regular run i.e. school/council contract.

Well I'm not that sure about that.

Anyway if the child travels alone in a saloon it's down to the driver, if they travel in the back with an adult it's down to the asult, in the front it's down to the driver.

Despite all this, if things go tits up, it's always down to the driver.

Having just read the link provided, It does not say that the adult is responsible. It says the driver is.

Ive a pupil aged 15 who sometimes doesnt put his belt on at night and clips his off before the vehicle stops, ive asked him and his mum to realise belts should be worrn whilst the vehicle is in motion.

one of the most disturbing things about this job is how many `PARENTS` dont put their kids seat belts on .i had a situation the other week when a woman got in with her 2 year old and just plonked her on the seat,when i told her that the child had to go on her knee with the parent wearing a seat belt and to have her arms wrapped around the childs waist , the parent lost the plot and went into one.when finished i smiled and explained that i will only continue the journey if she does as asked or she can leave and ask for another car,she lost it again.
next thing the father came out of the house and after an explanation he gave her a bo11ocking and told her to do as i had asked.that was a silent journey

whilst cruising the motorways in a truck and/or sprinter ive seen 4x4's fly past with babies held in mums arms (front seat) and kids wandering around in motorhomes, 5+ kids on the back seat of an astra, and more besides.....
