We have only 10 of these and lately I'm hard resetting and reprogramming one a day.
Ours lose their GPS (yes, auto update is set) or for the non-taxi drivers on our fleet, Tomtom won't start due to lack of memory even though there is 126mb free (not counting micro-sd card).

Any pointers as how to avoid these issues would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is to bin them.

They’re not a common device but it looks like you may be doing something not quite right with the set up. I have two companies local to you running 100% on these, one with 40 cars and the other with 80 and both are not reporting any issues. I’ll see if I can get Steve or Sam to give you a call because they’ve both had experience with them.

Bill :)

So far it seems these PDAs only play up if Tomtom is installed.
In my opinion that comes under 'not fit for purpose' when the supplier knew exactly what they were going to be used for

Just to avoid any confusion here, I should point out that we didn’t recommend or supply these devices. We knew that installing Tom-Tom on them wasn’t quite as straightforward as some other devices but it was possible and it did seem to work for us.

Not everyone chooses to install Tom-Tom so we weren’t aware of any long-term stability issues and to be fair, it unlikely the PDA supplier would have known that either.

We’ve only got one more biggish install before Christmas and after that it gets quiet for a few weeks so maybe we can look at this one for you. Meanwhile I’ve still got my old boy scout compass if you get desperate.

Now I feel guilty. I must point out that no one from Datamaster suggested these PDAs.
The supplier did say that he has over 200 units out in the field with no problems but every unit I have come accross has had to be reprogrammed within a couple of weeks.
So the issue here is really with Acer for producing inferior products.
Every PC or laptop I have encounted made by Acer has been a pain in the arse.
Really we need HTC to get back on the job.

Just had another back with no GPS.
This time no Tomtom being installed to see if it really is causing the problems.
This one lasted a week but driver relies heavily on Tomtom, so obviously not a real taxi driver.
I've given him a SPV M700 instead.
I'd test the Acer myself but I hardly ever use Tomtom so it would probably take me a year to 'break' it.
If other firms use these without problems cos they don't use Tomtom, then all ours will have to be the same.
Map books aren't expensive and I find learning it the old way is more likely to stick in the old memory cells.
I wonder if Mercury have started using these Acers yet, as they install Tomtom on all of theirs (at a cost)

We were doing so well over Christmas with our Acer PDAs and then this week I've has 3 back in 2 days. One of them lasted 2 weeks before the GPS went missing again. Auto download GPS data? Like hell it does.
Searching now for good old SPV M700s
