Cabbie’s taken for ride in £5k gem con

A CABBIE lost £5,000 when a gang of conmen convinced him they had a stash of gems worth £38,000 to sell.

Gullible Mohammad Javed, 40, handed over the cash after he was promised a share of the "deal" — which turned out to be an elaborate scam.

The dad-of-four, of Pollokshields, Glasgow, was duped last week after picking up a hire who called himself Musa.

He was then introduced to two "Zambian businessmen" supposedly trading in rubies.

A fourth man, posing as a gem dealer, weighed their wares in the back of Mohammad's cab and insisted the stones were worth £38,000.

When Musa came up with a plan to "cheat" the Zambians out of their share and give Mohammad a cut in exchange for £5,000, the cabbie leapt at the chance.

But he was left out of pocket when the men vanished with his cash. Mohammad groaned: "They seemed so plausible." Cops were hunting the gang last night.
