I was purely considering the legal aspect should a case go to court and whether a visual inspection using the wear indicators is sufficient. Of course the tyres should be replaced before they become borderline, but it's always handy to know your legal position should a cocky copper decide to put you before the beak. It could be the difference between a fine and points and no action.

Just as in a speeding offence where the police have to prove your speed using calibrated equipment or video, they also have to prove the tyres were below the legal limit. If the indicators are only accurate to .1 of a mm then the tyres could just as equally be .1mm under the limit as .1mm over.

Oh, and in Dusty's picture the circled wear indicator may be down to the limit but the other three look (to me) above the wear limit, in which case the pictured tyre is legal !

By the way the markings are called 'tread wear indicators' and this picture from Dartford Tyres shows them well:

The legal limit for car tyre tread depth is 1.6mm (across 75% of the tyre).

How many miles of a difference are there between 1.6mm and 2.0mm of tread? The reason I ask is because if you don't know when the tread hits 2.0mm, then it's time to replace the fecking tyre. How hard can it be?

It can be very bloody hard at the price of tyres today........then add to that their sneaky little Environmental charge for the safe disposal of your old tyres to pay for their uplift by a guy in a transit pickup with meshed sides which are then sold off by that very same guy in a Transit Pickup with meshed sides to some Cement works or some other processing plant which burns the bloody things and belches More Co2 into the atmosphere. Think Im gonna Buy a Transit Pickup with Meshed sides and get Paid twice for disposing of the same tyres...Im not a green tree hugger, but I do think its A [edited by admin] plan to screw the maximum amount of money from the typical hard up Joe. :x

Yeah, but as a professional driver you have to weigh the cost of a fine with points added to your licence, and being put off the road with maybe even a visit to the council - against the cost of a new tyre, as well as your own safety and that of your passengers. It's a no brainer. I know everyone stretches the truth, at least, to some extent, but if you get pulled you've got yourself to blame. It has nothing to do with the depth of the tread only your own stupidity in taking the chance. :-|
