So you're a member of the taxi trade.. But are unable to answer whether or not .. it would make a profit at one pound 50 per mile... 360 pound a day.... and your a taxi driver....

Yes, well that bit was self-evident, so I didn't think it needed a response - your question seemed rhetorical.

It was the latter bit I was actually responding to - "How much would be saved"?

Of course the driver would be making a fortune @ 1.50 a mile for 240 miles.

If I got 100 miles a day @1.50 per mile I'd be cock-a-hoop, even with another 100 miles dead to get back home \:D/

Do you think the subsidy on a 32 seater bus... is greater than on a 8 seater

Well you could well be onto something there, but that still doesn't help quantify the saving. :-k

I take it... that looking for business opportunities.... is not one of your strong points

Well it's certainly not yours.

Oh, no, I do apologise, according to Toots you don't really want a stranglehold on Sefton's taxis, because you'd be making more if drivers could choose to run their own vehicle - it's win-win and everyone's happy \:D/

Seriously though, Mr T, I'm sure you have a point of sorts about general subsidies for the taxi industry, but you're taking a helluva roundabout way of getting their.

In fact I'm tempted to use the ](*,) smilie in anger, but let's give it a few posts yet :D

I prefer people to use their own intelligence... to think about the possibilities for themselves..... if they can do that... then they have a chance of succeeding.... there are many opportunities opening for the Hackney Trade...

right across the country one of the biggest expenses any council has to contribute to is the public-transport system..... the bus companies for years have without doubt been making a fortune.... and the government in the past have tried to take some of this money back ie... you'll remember the implementation of the taxi bus scheme.... and recently the private hire bus scheme..... but what is different now..... councils through government are having to make massive savings, they are now Seriously looking for alternatives...

there's a new scheme.... that is being put forward in the Merseyside area... £20 million is being given to the old age pensioners... in the form of a smart card that has a value of £800 ...... the hackneys in the Merseyside area would need to be fitted with the machine to accept the card.... which would cost £5 per week...... this officially would mean that 4or 5 pensioners could travel at once door-to-door and only one need pay....

By the way Toots, you don't really say to the authorities that taxi drivers like yourself who have serveral other sources of income and just use the trade as a top-up should receive a public subsidy?

Yes, I can just see taxpayers salivating at the thought of that one :D

Lets get one thing right here. I don't use the trade as a top up.

So the driver gets to hire a plated vehicle for £150 per week, sounds pretty good to me. You can't buy a decent taxi and maintain it for that amount of money and on the plus side if you get fed up or another job you can just leave. There's pros and cons for both arguements

So where does this £150 per week figure come from Toots, did you just make it up?

I suspect you're talking three times that for an exclusive saloon rental in the likes of Brighton.

How much would it cost the driver to run his own vehicle?

So you don't bother about drivers paying £150 just for a plate in York, for example? How does that help them?

No apparently you did

Why will they pull the plug if it's going to save the tax payer money :?

Well I sincerly hope it doesn't involved paying a handful of selected drivers £360 per day out of the rest of us taxpayers' pockets
