90 per cent of cabbies will work during the Olympics

Nine out of 10 London cabbies plan to drive during the Olympics despite fears that the roads will be too congested, a poll has found.

It was feared that up to 40 per cent of black cab drivers would quit the capital during the event.

Last month the main taxi drivers' group, the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association, warned of a mass boycott unless drivers were awarded a 20 per cent bonus for the Games. About 700 members of the Radio Taxis Group, which controls a fleet of 2,500 cabs, responded to the poll.

Geoffrey Riesel, chairman of Radio Taxis Group, said: "I'm immensely proud of our drivers who place service first as London prepares to grapple with the challenge of moving millions of visitors around our city. As far as we can see from our poll our drivers are happy to work and we have no reason to believe other companies will be any different."

The group has been working with city officials to cope with traffic disruption during the Games.
