Council sends boy, 4, in taxi aloneA FOUR-year-old boy was allowed to travel more than 15 miles on his own in a taxi following a mix-up.
The boy was supposed to have been accompanied by an escort arranged by Worcestershire County Council’s children’s services for the taxi ride between Worcester and Kidderminster.
But a mix-up between the council and the taxi company meant the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had to make the journey on his own.
His father was distraught when he found his son was unaccompanied while meeting him after school at a contact centre in Kidderminster and complained to the council.
He has since received a letter of apology giving assurances that his son, who is in foster care, had not been left on his own before or since.
He said: “Anything could have happened to him. I was fuming. He didn’t know where he was going.
"It isn’t safe to send a four-year-old kid on his own in a taxi. It’s totally out of order. Apologies don’t make it any better.
"It shouldn’t have happened in the first place.”
The father said he was considering legal action.
In the letter to the father, Rob Kyle, a team manager at the council’s children’s services department, confirmed a request was made for an escort by social workers, but it was “not clear” why one was not present when the boy boarded the taxi.
He said the department would be investigating why the “oversight” occurred and would contact the boy’s father once a response had been received from the taxi company.
Mr Kyle added: “We have ensured that following this incident, [the boy] has had an escort every day.”
A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “We are aware of this incident which unfortunately was an oversight.
“We have written to the family and steps have been taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
