Hi to all and a merry xmas..
with regards to councils fixing age limits on taxis, is it legal for them to do this, i know london has its 15 year rule so why dont local authorities have to have the same, what im getting at is that if a black cab is good for 15 years in london then is it not good for 15 all over the country why do some councils have a 10 year rule

The age limit in London starts from jan 1st 2012,
It was introduced by the idiot mayor Boris just to satisfy the green brigade, who claimed that black cabs are causing the most pollution, and thats a load of pish.
We have a maximum age limit on our saloon and MPV cabs of 10 years 9 months,(cabs over 7 years 9 months will not be granted a 3 year licence) But if the owner has a WAV of any make it can stay on as long as it likes, as long as its in good condition and passes the council taxi test, as its a considered a commercial vehicle.
If your council insists on WAVs being removed from service at 10, ask them why, if you dont get a satisfactory answer , then challenge it by appealing to a magistrates using the London model,

No age limit at all in Glasgow. Only when you're replacing your vehicle, it must be less than 5 years old.

Some age limits apply to the age of the vehicle when first licenced, not the age at which they have to come off the road. You could licence a 9yr 11m old cab and as long as it kept passing the pit you could keep it on for as long as you want, but you couldn't licence one that was 10yr and 1 day old.

Its the same sheit as whats in your link only yours is a bit more elaborate, when you can find it amongst the other sheit

With their well know tendency to rust, black cabs rot away faster in our salt air and harsh winter climate. I doubt one would last 15 years here.

I won't comment on the rest , except to say that many councils use arbitary age limits in place of decent standards.

I think in the years ahead age limits will be applied less and less.

In Middlesbrough, all Taxi's and PH vehicles can't be any older than 6 years, the council are considering increasing the age to 8 years, and 10 years for a WAV (but only side loading WAV's, rear loading will be 8 years) You currently can apply for a years extension, which is a ultra test, even a scratch fails the car so re paint required at a minimum.

But the new rules, if agreed, 8 and 10 years, no increase will be considered.

Oh; WAV's must be New when 1st plated, all others can't be older than 3 years, when first plated; no previous write offs, no matter how repaired can be plated.

On what basis could a council have a different age limit based on which way a WAV is loaded?

Well almost,
due to this low emission rule owners who now buy a new TX will have to make sure its euro 5 compliant, but all the taxi sales place has done is stick a DPF filter on the exhaust and messed about with the already crap engine
So about 4 to 6 months down the line the DPF fecks up and blows the engine, as it should have been fully converted and modernised at the factory not some back st garage in clapham

Saloons/MPV/etc 1st plate (HC or PH) max age 4yrs then till plate till 6 yrs old then age exemption tests

"purpose built" (Hacks) 1st plate upto 10 yrs old then forever....


"Special event/limo" plates no age limits, must have "luxury features"

mileage limits 250,000 miles but ive got a laptop and lead...........
