This year it was mentioned (in our neck of the woods) that a "Black Friday" would hit us on the 16th, and in fairness it was good, but! to my way of thinking the real "Black Friday" was on the 23rd with 98% of companies/firms breaking up on the same day and in years gone by they would have been out on the razz (so to speak), unfortunately it was no better than a normal Friday of which I find difficult to understand.

Was it the same for you?

As I suggested previously perhaps the effect was more spread out this year because of the closeness of the last Friday before Christmas - the traditional defintion of 'black Friday' - to Christmas itself. Thus perhaps the previous nights were more busy than they would have been, particularly the previous Friday, but of course it's always difficult to tell, since the recession presumably hasn't helped overall, and if one night's extra work is spread over several other nights then it's often difficult to tell.

But these things change over time and there are always other factors to consider. For example, because it was on a Saturday evening and because of last year's awful weather I thought Christmas Eve might be better than last year, but it was dead as a dodo. But I think this is perhaps a longer term trend - Christmas Eve seems to have really dwindled over the years.

But perhaps the best response is not to spend too much time thinking about these things, since it ultimately gets you not very far :?

To a degree I can understand your thoughts, but I have always worked on the basis that the job is not rocket science - but I do give it a bit of thought, to give myself/yourself a bit of a chance/edge of work as opposed to those who sit and suck their thumb - and then claim that they have had a sh!t night.

Well clearly I agree to an extent, but on the other hand I think people can think about these things too much and tie themselves in knots thinking about this, that and the next factor, and then when it doesn't work out spending the next few hours thinking what might have been, when in fact it mightn't have been what they thought it might have been anyway #-o

Sometimes it seems that the drivers who just to the same old, same old ad nauseum have got the right idea.

I now understand as to why you do not give it too much thought  lol

yup Black eye friday as its known round here (traditional for all the builders to get slaughtered and then start a few fights amongst themselves) was definitely very poor

xmas day trade down 50% on last year

Boxing day about the same but mainly thanks to a 3am trip to Stansted

Speaking to drivers from both sides of the trade down here, and from all three major firms, it was worse than a normal Friday.

And Xmas and Boxing days have been the worst I have ever worked.

We're all doomed.
