Ah, I see. A free market, but only when it suits YOU?

You mean you were the one banging on about a free market in plates while at the same time advocating quality control, yet you accuse others of only supporting a free market when it suits?

Oh, I see, you've changed your mind about plates and quality control as well now. That's why you're supporting Ali T's profiteering while at the same time supporting the free market in plates plus light touch quality control that's the private hire trade.

Can you honestly believe you wrote this pash?

Yes, because I've been entirely consistent in these matters.

And I can also believe you wrote your pash, because you've been entirely, er, something other than consistent. :D

There's no conflict between quality control and the free market.

The basic law of the land is quality control, and you wouldn't advocate dispensing with that.

Basic rules of engagement exist throughoout the animal kingdom.

two animals may test themselves in a tussle for superiority, but they draw the line at destroying the other. In other words, there are limits.

That's what quality controls are. Merely limits. The difference being that all those who adhere to the quality controls are allowed to operate equally in the market.

Not the case in our trade.

But the real discrimination is that not only does not having unfettered access to the tools of your trade prevent you from operating equally in that trade, it also prevents you from having a say in how the rules for the trade are established, and what they are, and how they affect you and yours.

And that's slavery. Not racial, but opportunity and economic slavery.

No, but I suspect many people would see quality control contradicting the free market, and not just those who advocate free markets. Thus I'm not an advocate of unfettered free markets as regards quality control and fare regulation in the taxi trade, but I am in favour of a free market when it comes to taxi plates.

That's what I meant when I said free markets and the invisible hand are a good slave but a bad master - it should be exploited where it brings benefits (regarding plates) but regulated where the market doesn't work (as regards quality control and fare regulation).

If you want to dismiss that as hypocrisy and 'pash' then that's up to yourself, but in reality there are very few people who advocate entirely free markets, but on the other hand they seem quite happy to exploit free markets when it suits. And indeed those who advocate entirely free markets might change their mind if they actually became aware of the consequences rather than seeing the whole idea as simple theory.

Thus in essence I can't really see any fundamental contradiction between your own basic position and mine, and to that extent find your attempt to portray quality control as something other than interference in the market more than a tad contrived.

Once again, you are going down the academic route, but even if the above was the case, what does it matter?

Well essentially it's an academic text and to that extent it has to be engaged in academic terms, or at least to the extent that mere mortals like ourselves can do so.

My point essentially was people pick and choose from Smith to suit their ideology - as of course they do with any other argument or concept - and to that extent Chomsky is doing the same as he accuses others of doing, thus it does matter.

Quote:
Chomsky doesn't dismiss, he reinterprets, based on the further investigation into Smith's work, something he points out, is radically different to what most people want to believe.

Well I think he's right to the extent that Smith is cited primarily by free-marketeers who downplay his other thoughts (which are cited more by people leaning towards the political left) and thus on that we can agree, but if you think Chomsky's dismissal of various concepts as "delusion and fantasy" amounts to reinterpretation rather than dismissal then we'll just have to disagree on that.

Quote:
No he doesn't, he makes comment, on Smith's view of the division of labour, efficiency and productivity, etc. Then upon further investigation, takes Smith's division of labour argument to its logical conclusion of monstrous human rights abuses, requiring government intervention to stop it happening.

But he crudely calls for governments to end the division of labour, which is just bonkers. What I really think he means is that government should act to mitigate the excesses of the market, division of labour etc, but in the fashion of crude political rhetoric and hyperbole he just dismisses the whole thing altogether.

Surely not even he takes this entirely seriously, beyond of course the purposes of workaday soundbites.

Quote:
Chomsky then talks about markets and the lack of real trade and entrepreneurial spirit in command economies.

Well if only he did then his argument might be more compelling, but in actual fact he dismisses "trade" and "entreprenurial spirit" as "delusion and fantasy", which is completely different to the more reasonable way you've portrayed them above.

Quote:
There's more than one argument, and if you watch the video, it jumps from academic theories to their practical application in command economies.

Yes, but as I said it's primarily crude polemical rather than anything more - you shouldn't need me to tell you that politicians try to portray things as black and white rather than anything more nuanced and realistic, and Chomsky's video is an exemplar of that.

But that's why - despite his undoubted ability to analyse and critique - he'll always be marginal to the decision making process, despite his huge popularity with those of a radical bent.

Out of a matter of interest, have you ever had a conversation with some of these academic types? I have and let me tell you, I'm amazed some of them can cross the road on their own. They live in a bubble and have little idea how the real-world works. Chomsky, is one of the few notable exceptions. :-|

On the contrary, Chomsky's good at critique and polemic, but the type of system he advocates just ain't gonna happen, not in our lifetimes anyway.

That's why his prescriptions for society are only taken seriously by those on the radical fringe, probably camping out beside some investment bank or whatever.

Meanwhile, back in the real world.....
