Right after searching about on the old tinternet I cannot find an answer

Seatbelts for kids, I don't work days so let me in on your thoughts
Are we excempt, do the law not apply or does it

the scenio

mother gets in taxi with a couple of very young kids, say baby and toddler

seatbelts, whats the score, legally

see this
http://www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/sebc/li ... 0Belts.pdf

then see this

re seatbelts
http://www.hastings.gov.uk/taxis/taxi_news_issue9.aspx

it is all very unclear, the same as guide dogs, see above and their thoughts, the balls in your court

so if the seatbelts don't fit we can't take em, is this right or are taxis excempt

highway code rule No42 section states that all animals must be restrained or belted,[ re the taking of guide dogs.]

rather confused.

you can carry only the number of passengers you have seatbelts for including babies.

you are reponsible to ensure all under 14s are belted

was told today dogs need not be belted in a taxi.

now is that clear?

you have an exemption from wearing a seat belt as a taxi or PHV driver.

From Hastings Council

Seat Belts
I have now the 'official' Sussex Police view on children & seatbelts:

If the child is sitting on the seat then the belt must be worn BUT the belt needs to be appropriate for the child's, height, weight, etc;
So if a child sits on a seat and the belt doesn't fit properly because the child is too short, it mustn't wear the adult belt.
The child will have to wear something else or not travel.

All of the above is the drivers responsibility

If however the child sits on the adults lap, then it becomes the adult's responsibility and they should wear a harness that affixes to the adult/adults belt.
Although in this case it is the adult's responsibility, a driver would be advised to warn the adult fare of this fact

which seems very reasonable to me[/b]
