It is amazing as to how things happen.

My sun visor went all floppy on me so I had it replaced - which is great in the winter as it keeps the rain out of my eyes  - So some weeks down the line after parking the old broken one (don't ask me why) under my drivers seat, I eventually decide to bin it. What has that got to do with my radio - trust me I am getting there

So one very nice nearly uncluttered cab and then my clutch decides to pack - ok sh!t happens and it goes into a garage to get it done. The garage rings me to say come and pick it up, it is late in the day when they ring and I am not working that night or for that matter for the next few nights, so I tell them no rush, I will pick it up tomorrow. I go down to the garage and they tell me that I have got a little bit of a wait as the "For Hire Sign" that had been left on by them had drained the battery and they need to restart via a charge. This is not a big deal as I am sure it has happened to many, and besides the run back home will help to recharge the battery, and home I go.

Anyway a few days later I decide to check if the charge has held, it has not, so the battery comes out and I take it indoors to charge up. Battery goes back in and the cab fires up straight away - great,! at last something going right for a change! Well that is what I thought until I turned the cab radio on, it needs the code to be fed in - now I am believe it or not reasonably organised, not perfect - but very nearly  and I always put into my mobile stuff that I need - like code numbers for radios, there are (4) in there but none will work for this radio - of course the most obvious place to keep your radio code is on the back of your sun visor - of which I did - but a word of warning do not throw it in the bin before your clutch goes because your f%&$*%G radio will not work.

Does anyone know how to get around this as I am lost without my news/music.

Providing the radio has not been changed since new. You can take your registration document to a dealer and he can (for a fee) get the code from the manufacturer. I recently had to do this for one of my Renault Meganes and it cost £25.00

Either the main dealer for a price, or some of the smaller garages have got the codes on some sort of super disk, for a lower price.

Ebay do it john, just send them your radio reference number and they'll give you a security number.

Pull the radio out of the dash.
Some breakers write the code onto the radio if it has been replaced at any time.

No it is not - It is a replacement vehicle that I have had for around three years after my original got side swiped.

P.S Thanks for your help/input guys.

It started off in a strange way - and ended in a strange way!

On mine you can try to put a code for up to 14 times before it permanently locks, and for some reason I was convinced that there was a 2 in my forgotten code and tried a number of different combinations before it froze up on me. For those that do not know after each failure its own reset takes longer and longer, having said that I got to nine attempts and it would not allow me to try again.

I have been asking for advice on the net all over the place, not once getting to know someone who had actually had it happen to them but many did give sound info.

Numerous people mentioned that I should/would have to go to a dealer of which I was loath to do, as the costs (I suppose depending on your set up) ranged from nothing from a good kind hearted mechanic to a £300 quote from Mr mean.

I realised that no matter what the radio had to come out. Having had a cursory look at it I decided that it must be spring loaded as I could see two deepish holes and that I would need at least two very thin pointed objects to release (my perceived idea) as to how it should come out. The objects were inserted to no avail apart from some whirring sound that it caused and made me realise that, hmm that does not sound right. After lots of bugger x whatever, I realised that my efforts were futile and proceeded cave man style with a very large screwdriver, and because they were on hand a pair of pliers - actually I did not use a pair of pliers - just one lot .

As I said cave man style, and out it pops.... and the best part is..... amongst many numbers on the radio I.D and countless others there are (4) numbers pasted on in hand writing that could just be the code..................it was.

My main problem prior to trying this number was for getting the "Error message" to disappear, I did not try the freezer method although I dare say that I would have if all else had failed. I took the battery leads off in an attempt to drain power - perhaps I did not leave it long enough, but it did not work. Instead I left it for a number of hours (I was working) with the ignition on and the radio left in stuck mode - until it finally released itself. The bottom line is that the radio is as easy as ever to get out, the cab is an 06 plate so as it is reasonably modern then I would have thought that they could have made an effort to make it difficult instead of it just being slotted in.

Thanks to all for your input but it seems that there is still nothing like a lump hammer to sort things out - and whoever left the code on display on the radio for MR tea leaf/radio thief to think that Christmas was back again thank you.
