Hope you got a better quote elsewhere.
I read somewhere that some insurers are quoting stupid prices, because they want out of the taxi side of the business.

Just as a matter of interest, what would happen if they all pulled out, and you could only get normal private insurance

We'd all be fecked.

Won't happen though. There will always be someone prepared to charge an arm and 2 legs for a service that nobody else wants

Just a suggestion. As premiums are so high now, most people want to pay by DDM. Now most people seem to overlook the rate they pay for the privilige. Premiums are set by the insurance compnaies, not the brokers. However, you might find you can negotiate a few %age points off the instalment rate as sometimes the is a mark up on that too.

I have never understoof APR's, I am just interested in how much an instalment plan adds to the overall cost.

Also check out what you are being charged by way of broker fees and leagl expenses insurance. I confess both are a bit of a neccessary evil but some firms do take the urine.

Last year I had the choice of £1250 (broker1) or £1300 (broker2), but that included £10m public liability which woulda cost me £150, then I had the choice of a deposit+10 payments adding £200+ to the bill or 3x£400 with no admin fees, this year, with my NCB on hold the £2000 premium was payable by 4x£500....brokers can bend and twist to get your business

Surely the Government should be looking into the activities of these thieving Barstewards...how can they possibly justify such increases when they were making huge profits before the giant increases even started.
