Plymouth taxi driver jailed for crossing death



A Plymouth taxi driver who knocked down and killed a 76-year-old man after driving through a red light, has been jailed for four years.

Andrew Bates, 44, accelerated "trying to beat the lights" near Woolwell roundabout in December 2010, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

Victim Gordon Hollister, from Southway in Plymouth, was crossing the road after a supermarket trip.

Bates was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

Jo Martin, prosecuting, said Mr Hollister "crossed because the lights were green for him as a pedestrian and red for the driver Mr Bates".

She said Bates was accelerating "trying to beat the traffic lights".

"He had seen Mr Hollister at the traffic island pressing the button," she said.

Bates told the jury that he had been in a rush on the day and was "almost sure" the lights had been green.

Bates was also banned from driving for three years.

didn't we do this story to death a couple of weeks ago ?

we are all responsible for our actions although most people seem to think thats not the case until they end up in prison well he found out the hard way take chances and if it goes very wrong you pay a high price !
