Yes, I always take as 100% gospel what local trades say in the press

Yes, the complaints that occurred do seem a bit dubious, but I don't think they should detract from the basic arguments.

My town is relatively civilised, but the thought of some of the local taxi drivers operating without meters frightens me.

Mind you, the thought of some of the local drivers working with meters frightens me

hehe

Never any complaints at all?

Gosh, imagine that - a taxi trade without meters and no one has ever complained about a fare.

I wonder where the impetus for a fitting meters came from? Did councillors just wake up one morning and think, what'll we do today, I know, let's get the local taxis to fit meters.

I think meters are good for both customers and drivers, provided of course that the tariff is set to reflect local market conditions.

Hi dusty the council were asked by a March company if they could trial meters as they were having a problem with other companys undercutting them and their drivers wanted to "earn" what they should be allowed to. Thats why people shunned these cabs and only strangers or people who were only going such a short distance used them. This cab company then "Worked" with the council in making meters compulsary. |When this company tried to set up in wisbech with meters people discovered their fares were dearer than non-metered and avoided this company. Since then they have lost 4 drivers and have seen their takings fall. Thats why such an outcry

Thanks for the information, brodiedoe.

However all this turns out it's certainly an interesting lesson as regards fare regulation.

In our area: South Ayrshire.

The Meter defines the Maximum Fare that may be charged. It is then up to the Driver, or his Company, to decide what the fare will actually be, so long as it is equal too, or less than, the Metered Fare..

So, why all the wailing and knashing of teeth?
