Well numbers have certainly increased substantially in the last five years, and no doubt there's a lot less work because of the economic situation anyway, so that probably provided the impetus.

Not what I'd do myself, obviously, and I doubt if it'll make a lot of difference, but that's councils for you!!

Only fully covered in jeans I take it :D

it is also my understanding that ph numbers have dropped in the Wirral from some 1200 to 900 odd so overall there are less drivers now than some 5 years ago

Ah, typical HC mentality - as long as we're OK it doesn't matter about the rest, like PH drivers in the Wirral, ie Toots.

If the current number of vehicles stays the same, yet the market in punters declines, then it will get worse for those currently in the trade.

And as for new entrants, well now they have to wet someone's beak to get work. So I wouldn't say it's not worse for them.

Same for jockies who would have considered plating their own motors. But then we are being led to believe restricting hackney numbers has saved them all £30,000.

Clearly they are too thick or not grown up enough to decide for themselves.

Makes no odds to me tbh as the HC and PH work on the same circuit thus making no impact to the pre booked work really. Before derestriction HC worked the roads and their own circuit and PH worked their circuit we all had a share of the market. Since derestriction the market has merged and the only people to benefit are the PH companies that have grown and now consist of 3 main companies and a couple of smaller ones when there used to about 30 small companies that knew all their customers and provided a reliable service with customer waiting at a minimum, now customers could be waiting up to an hour thus ringing all 3 main circuits and getting in the first one to arrive. Imo it's an utter disaster it doesn't improve things for the customer or the driver but the circuit owner is happy, go figure

But that would be the same for anyone who couldnt achieve finance to get one of the 3 remaining plates?

Mind you, they should have joined a few years ago....the snatched back cabs must have been going really cheap.

And the loss of work, to the PH trade, that effects those hackneys with radios will have no effect on the ranks?

The Wirral really does seem to be in another world. All those extra cabs on the ranks and you can only get one at the weekend. All those extra cars on the circuits and waiting times have increased substantially. An when derestricted, taxi numbers more than tripled then nearly halved in a couple of years.

But I supsect you will be slightly worse off with restricted taxis, Toots, because at the very least new HCs would have been doing a bit of street work, whereas it'll all be pre-booked if they're forced to go PH instead.

Yes, that'll be the 100-odd taxis that were a figment of someone's imagination.
