So let me get this straight.
I rent a cab 280 per week, this includes insurance, tyres, tax, another car if breaks down. (is this a normal price?

Say I have my license, hackney and private, does having both mean I can pick people up on the street as by radio from the depot?

What other expenses do I have?

When you rent a cab from a cab company, when do I earn, what do I have to pay them other than the rent for the cab, anything or nothing. Do I pay the rent on the cab and then anything I make is mine or what?

Exactly how difficult is the knowledge of the area test for Newcastle, we have sat navs these days, is it really strict or is this taken into account?

Thanks for the feedback.
Bob

Difficult to tell because there are a few factors involved such as the type of vehicle. And if it's a Hackney and numbers are restricted then the rent will be higher as a consequence.

If it's a big organisation then I doubt if you'll be paying over the odds, but in any case once you've been in the job a while you'll get to know the rentals and what you should expect for your money.

I wouldn't get too hung up about it at this stage.

If you have a dual licence then it depends on the vehicle you're driving. If it's a private hire vehicle then you're confined to pre-booked work, but with a hackney carriage you can pick up people in the street from taxi ranks and when they flag you down. But hackneys can also do pre-booked radio work as well, although not all do.

Apart from refuelling the car (presumably) just your licences.

Each operation has its own way of doing things, but generally you'll pay the rental once a week and apart from refuelling the car everything else is yours. (There are various informal terms for the rental, but "settle" seems to be quite common, but it's more a local thing.)

So at least that usually means you have cash in your pocket at the end of your shift.

You may have to do some runs on account though, in which case you may take a while to get that money, but each operation does these kinds of things differently, so basically you'll have to ask them or just pick it up as you go along.

If you get a lot of account runs then that may be a pain because you won't get the dosh for a while, but again each business is different and you may not have to do many account runs, if any.

Of course, if it's a half-decently run operation then they'll tell you most of this before you hit the road.

Don't know anything about the Newcastle knowledge test, but I doubt if sat nav will have made any difference to it.
